whilst?

In standard British English and Australian English, whilst is a conjunction synonymous with while. In American English and Canadian English, whilst is considered pretentious or archaic.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whilst

I enjoy flavouring my speech with words I don't hear often here, but one I have never mastered is whilst. Who uses this word? Are you experiencing enjoyment using it? While I don't use it, I am enjoying the sensation it creates in my mouth as my tongue flutters rapidly over the lst. It is curious and titillating, causing feelings of great delight.

A thread targeting Pedro? Really?

Sorry, to clarify, I don't think there's anything to be ashamed of using whilst. My intent was to initiate a light and pleasant thread on lexicon.

I regret if my message was so construed or if there's a back-story to the word of which I'm unaware. I thought my positive support of the word in my original message should have waylaid any jerking of knees that might result but I suppose I didn't calculate for every variable.

I believe diversity of tongue is wonderful and lament the homogenization of language. I say I presume Pedro uses whilst in the same way I might say I presume Pedro has two arms. It was intended as a neutral statement.

My apologies if you - or anyone else - was offended.

Disappointed, Saxi, I was disappointed. I remember back in the day when you were the happiness czar, I remember when you'd try to cheer people up, and occasionally ask for foreigners to be banned, I remember when posting criticisms of your posts would earn a valuable pm rebuke from OwenShooter.

What have you become?

You're better than this. You just have to be better than this.

Again, I'm sorry I was not aware if there was a backstory to this word that somehow implicates those who use it. I have edited my original post to remove Pedronicus' name. Owing to a minor legal misunderstanding, I have not been to the UK or EU since 1991 and I was not aware discussion of this conjunction had become an offensive topic. If anyone would like to report me to the Valued Mods I will plead guilty.

Nobody is out to get you Saxi, for most of us you're like a grandfather. Just... well we care about you, and we, well I, at least, have noticed a bit of a decline. We're concerned more than anything. There's no group of people out to "implicate" you. Nobody was calling for an edit, and you're not in any kind of legal trouble. Nobody else has posted. You're just talking to me.

Just think about the people who cared about you, back in the day, and maybe think about retirement. We can find you somewhere nice- maybe over on the map making forums.

LMAO, if that's true there's a certain lawyer who shall remain nameless (*cough* Karl-Heinz "K" *cough*) who's gonna be sorely disappointed when Saxi and three heavyset Bulgarian gentlemen arrive in Dahlem looking for 19 years worth of retainers back! :o

Whilst always reminds me of the Frankie Goes to Hollywood song "Two Tribes".

"If any member of the family should die whilst in the shelter
Put them outside but remember to tag them first for identification purposes"

I clicked on this thread, read the poll options and clicked the first option....

Then I start reading the thread and I would like to say that I take no offence when I was mentioned by the OP.

Unfortunately another word that has fallen by the wayside in the English lexicon is 'Splendid'

And cockamamie! As Clint Eastwood's character says in Under Fire, there's not enough people saying "cockamamie" nowadays. It's a splendid word that can be used in many ways whilst sitting at the local microbrewerie and analysing the decline and fall of our corrupt society!

What about stickybeak? Does anyone, other than RadioJake [CENSORED BY ORDERS OF SYMMETRY], use the word stickybeak? What does it mean? It sounds very salacious and R-rated.

Consider any such order rescinded- it certainly didn't come from my office. Please restore your post to its original glory.

The above post is a trap. Whilst I was whittling some wood, I gathered concrete evidence from the Wikileaks that exposes the truth about Symmetry's intentions and the actions which occurred in his office of censorship.

Whilst reading this thread I realised Saxi is suspiciously knowledgable about things English.
It lends credence to the theory that Eric Honecker did not die in Chile, but that the former East German Premier resettled in Neasden NW London where he is living happily to this day. Saxi is the agent who got him there.
