Fantasy: The "Battle Circle" series. It's a post-apocalyptic future in which a very few scientists (who are hidden from the rest of the inhabitants of the world) are attempting to re-engineer the human race through a system of individual combat woven within the culture.
Sounds like it should be science fiction, but I definitely consider it more along the lines of fantasy. Tremendous series.

Fantasy: The "Incarnations of Immortality" series. This series is about "the gods" (Mars, Gaia, Death, etc...), but from their perspectives as humans take their form (through the gods dying for various reasons). Another tremendous series.

I just read that one the guy wrote based on things his dad said. It was pretty good.

1 fiction and 4 non-

Saxi's Reading List for nietzsche:

1. Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair's Youth (Herman Hesse)
The German-language world's Tom Sawyer. I'm a little hesitant to even suggest this to nietzsche, though, as I predict he might evaporate from ecstasy, given his delightfully sentimental personality.

2. Cleansing the Doors of Perception (Huston Smith)
I've gone to each of Dr. Smith's lectures at the Krotona Institute down in Ojai for the last few years. Huston doesn't have many years left (he's 90-something). His death may cause the end of the world.

3. Voltaire's Bastards: the Dictatorship of Reason in the West (John Raulston Saul)
Saxi recommending a book by a Canadian? Verily, not just any Canadian but the consort to the former Viceroy. "Say it ain't so Saxi!" LOL - it is! :P This book would have been far more controversial it was if it was just 500 pages shorter. None of the critics got to the juicy parts.

4. Uncharted terriTORI (Tori Spelling)
The former 90210 star really gives out some delish scoop in her tell-all bio. What a treat it was reading about her delightful musings on life as a Hollywood mother in LaLa land. Ol' Saxi loves the cougar Tori, but just wishes she didn't look like a horse. UGH.

5. Goodnight Moon (Margaret Wise Brown)
The 130 words of this book - given to American children at a very impressionable age - have become so imbued into that country's collective conscious that even drilling unrelated words, but using the same mesmerizing staccato and tempo of the book, can activate sublimated desires by order. When you really absorb the tempo of the book you'll soon recognize it is the same tempo that is used to deliver U.S.-Canadian news reports on sensitive topics (by design). Use it in your interpersonal conversations with North Americans for similar impact.

Ishmael- by Daniel Quinn

A book about a telepathic ape who puts out an ad, "teacher seeking student." An individual named Alan takes up the call. He has many discussions with Ismael, the telepathic ape. Ishmael is a very wise ape, or gorilla, cannot quite remember, and has many things to say about the state of the world and commentaries about it. A very interesting book if you're at all interested in sociology or the human race in general. It will give you a new perspective with which to view the world. I highly reccomend it. For more information on this book, and probably a better description than I could muster, visit this site... www.readishmael.com

Temeraire series.

If you like history, then you'll like this. Basically, the Napoleonic Wars except that dragons exist as sentient beings throughout the world and come in many different breeds and sizes and some have different abilities. Obviously some have the classic fire-breathing ability, but others can spit acid, see at night, or even roar with the force of a hurricane known as the "divine wind."

Pretty cool and plety of action.

LOTR series because is the freakin' LOTR series.

Lots of good suggestions so far... The Fountainhead is dope... Ishmael is legit... Pokemon is Pokemon... Goodnight Moon needs no introduction. I personally would recommend the novella "Everybody Poops", which contains a hard-hitting analysis about some of life's basic needs and desires. The subject matter is a bit heavy, though, and it is for mature audiences only as it contains a great deal of scatological language and imagery.

I would recommend the "Star Wars: Darth Bane" series, especially to fans of the series. It takes place before the movies and basically tells how 1 man destroys and rebuilds the entire sith order. It's among my favorite series read so far(though maybe not after I check out "Incarnations of Immortality")

Ayn Rand sucks.

Three good books to read: For Whom the Bell Tolls by Hemingway; Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck; Light in August by Faulkner.

The best book I've read in the last year that happens to be about war: The Things they Carried by Tim O'Brien. Fantastic, fantastic read. In my top 5 books of all time.

The Shack William Paul Young. Caused all kinds of controversy. A very unorthodox point of view.

The Visitation Frank Peretti. Yeah, I know, it's "Christian Fiction", but don't judge a book by its genre. It's an excellent read, very honest, and not preachy.

Both books of Timothy.

They tell you all sorts of awesome stuff about how to live, including that men are way, way more awesome than women, and so the fairer sex shall always be subservient to her master, and stuff. Super good values to be learned in there.

Because the Off Topics forum is often filled with discussions about the economy, old and new orders, and general references to the "American Dream" and the viability or lack thereof --- I'd recommended a couple of plays that all work off those similar themes, though each responding and commenting in different ways: Streetcar Named Desire -- Tennessee Williams; Death of a Salesman -- Arthur Miller; Long Day's Journey into Night -- Eugene O'Neill.

I would second that recommendation of Death of a Salesman. We read this back in 9th grade pre-AP English. It's a damn good read. Kinda sad actually.

Right on, I'm glad at least one person will read it. It truly is a great book, with a great message. And if you do like it, then I would also suggest The Story of B by Daniel Quinn and My Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. Both are sort of continuations of Ishmael, with My Ishmael being the direct continuation. The Story of B actually has a deeper story and delves into religion quite a bit. Both of these are excellent reads though. And I hope you enjoy Ishmael. If you do, be sure to recommend it to some other people.

Non-fiction: Chaim Potok Wanderings, history of the Jews. Non fiction, but almost reads like fiction. Well researched and a good read.

'Why America Slept - The Failure To Prevent 9/11'

Written by Gerald Posner. He's a non-partisan Wall Street guy that decided to research what gaps in security allowed 9/11 to happen. He wrote it shortly after 9/11 (2003). I though it did a much better job than the partisan 9/11 report ever was going to do. Check it out.

'Losing The Race - Self-Sabotage in Black America'

Written by John McWhorter, a black Berkely professor that lives in Oakland (the most ghetto city in America if not Detroit). Much like the other book, it is very comprehensive and the analysis is wonderful.
