I have to laugh whenever I see the word.
ok so maybe it's not as bad as it seems, but I have a right to be upset, especially when there wasn't any communication.
Exactly! That is what I think most people are upset over--the lack of communication.
If the admin would have just communicated this incident to us before hand, not so many people would have been pissed.
But my pissiness is coming to an end. I am just curious about how the new maps are going to look now.

Leaving CC because you think a single map is ugly has got to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. There's over 50 other maps, go play them for the next month if it bothers you so much. The cool thing about this site is its variety, not how well it mimics playing exactly the same board game you could play with your friends at home.
Here, here. Well said. Except there are over 100 other maps, not 50.

Although, I must point out that lately people have had one thing after another happen that many have not liked:
1. Wicked
2. t-o-m
3. A whole bunch on mods leaving.
4. The (Not Yet) Banned Forum disappearing.
5. 2 maps getting their graphics changed to boxes with numbers in them.
There are probably a lot more people can list, although I would agree with your post overall. This is all trivial to the experience on the site.
P.S. One or two more hours and this will be the longest thread ever. Keep up the good work!

No, they're not. They're merging them all into one thread. It's in Q&A.

Yeah but there's still not official communication on the home page, and this switch happend like 4 hours ago. Since then, I've learned that the Iceland map has gone live, but no official word on the situation, what it is, what's being done to remedy it, and what anyone can do to help (such as begin work on Classic 2.0

)

Yeah, everything is still exactly the same. They just changed attack to assault, and cards to spoils. And turned two maps into simple dot-based maps with the same gameplay but less pretty graphics.

As to how ugly it is, sure, it can be revamped, and hopefully will be, it's not my favourite map right now

However, it's got to steer well clear of any possible copyright concerns.
Twill
That's ridiculous.
You can't copyright the concept of a map of the world. Basic copyright law states that you cannot copyright an idea - only an individual expression of that idea. If a map of the world was a copyright problem, there would only be one atlas ever published.
As long as CC hasn't scanned the actual Risk board map (which would be subject to copyright), then the classic world map is free of infringement - in fact, it has it's own copyright. Nor can you copyright the words 'attack', 'fortify' or 'cards'. If Hasbro has any copyright interest, then it's in the gameplay (which hasn't changed) and perhaps in the overall concept of a military campaign game - and there are enough of those around in various forms to suggest that that's not the problem, especially given the basic copyright law tenet above.
When the classic map is revamped (and that had better be soon), what else could it be but a map of the world? It will still be divided into continents (that's part of the gameplay), and continents will still be divided into regions. As far as I can determine, you can still call those regions exactly what you're calling them now - there can be no copyright on 'Western Australia', on 'New Guinea', or even on 'Kamchatka'. So the use of the map is not a copyright issue, and the use of the words describing parts of that map is not a copyright issue.
There may be a slight quesion mark over the bringing of all of these disperate elements together (which is, after all, what makes Risk unique), but then you're bringing the most unique of those elements together in all of the other maps as well - that is, it's the gameplay which is the deciding factor here, and that's still common among all the maps.
Just my latest contribution.

Still a very unhappy customer.

I'd also just like to throw out there that I'm not pissed that I've lost over 600 points in the past 45 days or so... my bitterness is based on the changes to the maps, instructions, lingo, etc, without any official communication, notification, apology, reparation, thoughtfulness of anyone, life...uh, and liberty and justice for all.

Did we have to change the dice in Conquer Club?

The dice are not really copyrighted by anyone. It can not be copyrighted and anyone can use them. So why change Conquer Club's dice?

Oh sorry - I should have added ...
From a strictly legal point of view, there is no such thing as a "potential" copyright issue. It's either an issue or it's not. It's either a breach or it's not.

Planning ahead is for responsible people! CC is full of irresponsible people who give up their normal lives to play an online Risk-style game.
Plus, now we get to all be involved in the revamping if we want to! It is going to be great!

Probably because Risk uses three little white dice vs two little red dice....something stupid like that.
Hasbro doesn't have a copyright on
virtual dice vs
real dice vs any dice for that matter!

The problem with copyright issues is not whether you were right or wrong. My high school had to change its logo this year because another one several states away was using the exact same one and threatening to sure. Although our school was founded long before theirs, the administrators found it was easier to change the logo everywhere (that means every form, calendar, banner, all the signs around the school.... everything really.) just because they found it was less expensive to do that than pay a lawyer to defend their case.
So, in a way, it is just whether you want to go through the whole legal process, lose a lot of money to pay a lawyer just so you can keep doing what you have always been doing, or inconvenience yourself slightly for a month or two until the maps are revamped? What would any of you do in this situation?
