Ooo, and maybe, just maybe, putting an umbrella over Europe is a bad idea, diplomatically. First of all, the Cold War is over, second, the reason we haven't destroyed ourselves yet is just that, if one attacked the other, we'd both destroy ourselves. But if all the sudden Russia can't hit us while we can take all the potshots we want at Russia, don't you think that might make the playing field a little bit imbalanced and could possibly force Russia to do something, oh, I don't know, drastic?

They're not being soft on defense, they're being smart on wallets and diplomacy. As much as you like to think so, America is not the end all be all and certainly can't stand alone diplomatically, so pissing off allies and making enemies doesn't make us look strong, it makes us look big, stupid, and alone.

Hopefully we will never have to wish we had one. And as dozens of US cities go up in mushroom clouds, it will be too late to say, "We should have invested some money to prevent this."

And why would Russia want to start nuclear war with us, pray tell?

I can see a justification for maybe putting up a mobile or quasi-stationary defense system in order to protect against more relevant threats, such as North Korea or Iran, simply because their leaders seem to be crazy, but even then, their supposed "craziness" more than likely stems from their own need to keep their citizenry appeased. You know, make it look like they're doing something to take down the "Capitalist fiends" or the "Great Satan", but in reality, anyone in that sort of position of power knows not to do anything stupid, especially if they're elected or encouraged into power by forces other than their own.

As long as we have our own arsenal that's large enough to destroy their people and interests several times over, we have nothing to worry about as far as nuclear weapons being launched by regular militaries. Our real threat stems from those crazy enough to sneak a tactical nuclear warhead into a city and blow up both themselves and the countryside.

That's why we need to beef up our domestic defense and security forces instead of wasting our money on useless defense systems.
The inflation rate in Zimbabwe just hit 4 million percent. Some people say it is only 165,000, but they are just being stupid. -Scott Adams, artist and writer of Dilbert

Ummm because we are the lone superpower. (Not for long but that's beside the point) Do you think there are nations out there that would love to see the end of the US? China? North Korea? Iran? Russia?

well given the progress made with N kor recently and the fact that (i paraphrase from the whitehouse) iran doesnt actually have any decent rockets / is about 15 years behind where we actually thought they'd be on the ballistics front, PLUS the cost-savings in the middle of a global recession that america makes by scrapping this ridiculous scheme.. well, one has to ask why exactly anyone has a problem with them doing so, least of all an american.
had i been wise, i would have seen that her simplicity cost her a fortune

I don't see a nuclear war becoming a reality anytime soon. And I don't see the citizens of the world supporting a global war either.

Iran and North Korea are not true threats to the US. Not until they have tech that could actually allow them to strike at the US, on her own soil. Any conflict would be more of a repeat of US vs Iraq. Being threats to our ally's however, is a serious concern that we all have.
War between regional superpowers (like China, US, Russia, Europe) seems far fetched too. This is the a new century, and war isn't what it used to be. Look at what America did to Iraq by taking out it's power first. Microwave guns, cyber attacks...
Granted Russia has been barking at everyone (due mostly to ages of cultural isolation? and being the target of every single other nation's military exercises until like '01?)... but no one seems to be taking into account Europe's ability to defend/strike against the Russians. Or Israel's ability to defend itself.

I don't think that there is a military superpower out there that is in a position to attack/destroy anyone...

And yeah, the missle defense system doesn't work guys.
I have been away from the nets for a while, but could this also have something to do with Russia's plans to build a "missle defense system" in CUBA?
