personally, i live in the USA (Youngstown, Ohio), and i dont know if i can name all the states. im 23 years old, and knowing the names of all the states isnt something that i use on a day to day basis. i sell computers and do web programming.

until i started playing counter strike with some canadians (tom_collins), i didnt even know canada was broken up. i just assumed it was a giant mass, because i was never taught anything about it in school.

just thought id share my lack of knowledge.

not even americans themselves have to know it, as long as they know there own address, they will get along fine

......lol.....I hope your joking. Perhaps most polite BIG CITY. Whenever I go up north, more so to New York its WAY more rushed & impolite then down here in the South.

However Big City wise, I'd have to agree that New York might be the most polite big city since Charlotte/Atlanta and what not are very impersonal even by northern city standards.

I am appalled that someone would worry about this.

Go to your downtown area and find some homeless guy sleeping on a bench. Hand him an apple, a bottle of water, or maybe a job application.

Find something more important to be embarrassed about than the percentage of people who know the capital of Guam.

I don't know the states of England or Canada (or Columbia or Russia). If I ever move there, I'll look into it. Until then, my livlihood isn't reliant upon that knowledge.

Unless you consider it as a tool for memory development, I don't think there's much use to learning the provinces/states of other countries. I moved to a new city back in January and still don't know any of my neighbours by name. I suppose if you're going to be travelling in a foreign country (or your own for that matter), it might be useful to know where you are

Yea, because having an awareness if world politics is never useful. If anything, it's more important

You know that whole issue with the middle east. Well, that does effect your livelyhood. Being aware of world issues is very important. Of course, if you don't vote then it's fine, but if you do, you should make an effort to know what effect your vote will have.

p.s. You know at least know enough to know that England, Canada, Columbia and Russia don't have 'States'

To the original poster. It's not all that weird. I wouldn't expect people to know the internal divisions of countries.

This thread ties in nicely with the ongoing United States Tournament series.

Let's each post the name of a country's province or state. Also list the capital and as interesting fact about it.

I'll go first.
Uttar Pradesh.
Its capitol is Lucknow (How apropos for CC) and it is the most populous state in the world.

Monza and Brianza

This province was separated from the province of nearby Milan. I've googled it, but can't find any reason for the separation. Perhaps one of our Italian members could give us an explanation.

I came across this odd fact when I was recently studying the Iron Crown of the Lombards. The Iron Crown is housed in the Cathedral of Monza. I was reading about the Cathedral of Monza and was somewhat surprised that it was described as being "near" Milan rather than in Milan as I had previously assumed it was. So I looked further and found the additional factoid about Monza and Brianza breaking away from Milan.
