USA has just stopped pretending Ukraine has its own government. The USA flag has been raised over the headquarters of the Ukrainian secret police in Kiev ...
Even when the Japanese set-up their puppet government in Manchuko they still had the good sense to keep the Manchu flag flying around so it looked like an actual independent country.

After a visit to kazakhstan, Hollande came for a surprise visit in Moscow to meet Putin at the airport. they were all like "wez friends, let's sort this out". Putin was also concerned about hollande getting cold and proposing him his coat... ridiculous.
I guess we're shippin them ships.

Russia has announced it will take the monetary penalties France will be paying it and use them to build its own aircraft carriers.
So what s up now with russia s economy? They do something the west doesn t like and the west torpedoes its economy. Maybe they re not as powerful as goran thinks.

Luckily I heavily invest in the russian appliance industry, so I am seeing a boon in purchases. Unfortunately, I can't get the money out of the country fast enough.

Hitler/Napoleon were thinking the same, it was easy for them until they reach the lands inhabited with Russians, but after that things become complicated.
Russian Economy is just fine, what is happening to the ruble is result of political pressure, not real economical pressure. Currently western companies are exchanging large amounts of rubles into foreign currencies thus losing quite big... Russian government can also use drastic political measures to level up the value of the ruble. Tax all companies that want to transfer western currencies outside of Russia with 99.999% of their value but I guess that isn't done since the companies are not extracting the money yet.

yeah I guess it's fine, your currency is worth half what it was worth a few month before...
I heard some people have mortgages in dollars and are paid in rubles.... they can't pay the banks and their housing is worth jack shit compared to what they stil owe; they can't pay and they can't sell...
no one is truely independent goran, no country has such power. you are delusional.

Sure this is the case for good part of Russians that have mortgages, probably the most adequate response for them would be to take the assets that foreign companies have in Russia and give it to them. But then you will whine even more

The dominant cause of Russia's current fiscal problems is Saudi Arabia screwing around with oil prices. US and EU sanctions don't really have that much to do with it.

1) ROSSIYA bank and 6 other smaller banks have had their assets frozen + the russian defense industry
2) Russian companies are not allowed to borrow money for more than 90 days on international markets to avoid them increasing their external debt and the debt's roll over
3) Th EU countries have all cancelled their contracts with russia, in the gas and miltary industry
4) a great number of european banks and companies have dramatically reduced their business with russia
Russia has enough reserves for the monetary crisis not to be that important though.
What you say makes no sense wdk. The US is pushing saudi arabia to increase its production to dramatically reduce the gas price, right now in a 2 year low 90$ per baril which could go down to 70-60$ in 6 month time. Those prices won't stay that low more than a year from now though.
There are not enough dollars in russia right now and most import contracts are in dollars, therefore russian companies have to buy more expensive dollars and are getting screwed.
Nevertheless, it does seem like the market is over reacting.

And what demonstrable effect have those sanctions had, compared to a significant price squeeze on a resource whose revenues (along with gas) make up 50% of Russian public spending?

That's the onset of an economic crisis, Goran. See how the Russian central bank keeps trying to raise interest rates? They're trying to prevent capital outflows (which entails selling Russian currency for more useful currency). That hasn't been working, or so it seems, so what's their next step?
I'm not sure how practically nationalizing any firm which wishes to convert their rubles into euros/dollars is teh bestest way to save an economy. People aren't stupid. You can stop currency sales--in this manner, but it's not like they'll keep selling goods and hiring people in a backwards country.

So ending an illegal collusion that artificially drove up the prices is "screwing around". What, are you a Venezulan dictator? Your opinions are so based on what would help the l33ts of the world, I can't help but consider that you are so 1% (at least in China).
Putin himself said sanctions had 30%-40% of the overall impact on the economy. Why would he lie like that?

No I never said stopping currency sales, nor nationalization of companies I said limitation of money transfers from Russia to other countries. For example if Russian Company wants to invest and buy another company in foreign country they will have to pay huge taxes. Thats the only way now because capitalism works only with supply/demand and speculations.
Currently Russia is getting less foreign currency(because of lower oil prices) and foreign companies(now probably everyone) want to transfer their money out of Russia. If there is limitation of how much can be transferred out then there will be a balance of supply/demand. Speculations can be dealt with other measures.
