well Hollande and Poutin are now pretending to be friends. After a visit to kazakhstan, Hollande came for a surprise visit in Moscow to meet Putin at the airport. they were all like "wez friends, let's sort this out". Putin was also concerned about hollande getting cold and proposing him his coat... ridiculous.

Currently western companies are exchanging large amounts of rubles into foreign currencies thus losing quite big... Russian government can also use drastic political measures to level up the value of the ruble. Tax all companies that want to transfer western currencies outside of Russia with 99.999% of their value but I guess that isn't done since the companies are not extracting the money yet.

Russia has enough reserves for the monetary crisis not to be that important though.

What you say makes no sense wdk. The US is pushing saudi arabia to increase its production to dramatically reduce the gas price, right now in a 2 year low 90$ per baril which could go down to 70-60$ in 6 month time. Those prices won't stay that low more than a year from now though.
There are not enough dollars in russia right now and most import contracts are in dollars, therefore russian companies have to buy more expensive dollars and are getting screwed.
Nevertheless, it does seem like the market is over reacting.

And what demonstrable effect have those sanctions had, compared to a significant price squeeze on a resource whose revenues (along with gas) make up 50% of Russian public spending?

I'm not sure how practically nationalizing any firm which wishes to convert their rubles into euros/dollars is teh bestest way to save an economy. People aren't stupid. You can stop currency sales--in this manner, but it's not like they'll keep selling goods and hiring people in a backwards country.

No I never said stopping currency sales, nor nationalization of companies I said limitation of money transfers from Russia to other countries. For example if Russian Company wants to invest and buy another company in foreign country they will have to pay huge taxes. Thats the only way now because capitalism works only with supply/demand and speculations.
Currently Russia is getting less foreign currency(because of lower oil prices) and foreign companies(now probably everyone) want to transfer their money out of Russia. If there is limitation of how much can be transferred out then there will be a balance of supply/demand. Speculations can be dealt with other measures.
