Lots of homeless too, the climate and the cool people draw them.

Yeah, always wondered why homeless people hang out in places like NYC. You're homeless - go live somewhere pleasant!

If you haven't already, go to Berkeley bowl (grocery).
I think half the fun is exploring on your own, but if you want more specific suggestions, pm me. My family used to live up there.

It wouldn't post the link.
But it's on zillow.com now if you look for Maplewood rentals, 5+ bedrooms.
I think I did it wrong. I ended up with the least expensive one being $4200/Month.

Sounds about right...
Then again, where I live, I can buy a whole house for that! (yes, a fixer upper foreclosure, but a house).
OR, you can buy one that is in reasonably good, very livable condition for 30K.

Non-citizens cannot own property in most of Mexico (maybe all, not sure on that).
There are plenty of houses around here that go for 20-40K.
A relative of mine has a house in CA, worth about 1 million... it is single level 3 bedroom with a small front and back yard, in OK shape, but nothing fancy. My house has more living space, plus a full attic and basement (cement floor/walls, very useable), a new boiler for heat, well insulated (a BIG point in my area!), a two stall garage with an attic above the garage and a double-sized yard, right in town... some realtors might try to put it at 60K, but if I wanted to sell it, it would go for a bit more than 40K.

There are no houses for 30k in my area. You can't even get a plot of land for that price. About the only thing I've ever seen that cheap are beat up manufactured homes ready to move. You'll be lucky to find something of quality for 100k.

Shit, I'll be happy if I can find a decent, small 2 bedroom condo for less than 250k.

No directly, but they use bank's trustfunds to own them.
Are you interested in buying in Mexico? I'm selling an fixer upper in Mazatlan, nice calm area, close the the Marina, Malecon, Plaza Machado, etc. Gimme 80k and it's yours.

And where, pray tell, is this magical land Player? Only places in Oregon I know of you can get a liveable home for under 50 grand are in extremely remote areas.....no jobs, no stores, etc. Hunting....outdoor recreation.....and meth....thats about the available distractions.....lol.
We go there for options 1 and 2

Actually been going to halfway for 40 years for hunting.....have always considered buying a house to stay in between like 4 guys....check this one out

So here I am in Cali, but the moving van is gonna be about a week late. Spit.
PS the reason rentals in Maplewood are so expensive is because of the huge property taxes - my old place is almost 2 grand a month just for that.

I live northcentral PA.. won't get more specific than that.
Per Oregon and CA.... traveled all over both extensively. There is a huge difference between values in Eastern Oregon, coastal Oregon and the various environs in between.
But... we have factories here, hunting (though its gone way downhill, according to those born and raised here), and now Marcellus Shale, but yeah.. there is a reason I am working for low wages at a nursing home.

yeah, maybe with a nice bridge??.
Actually, I imagine you might be serious, but if I had that kind of money, do you think I would be living where I am? -- the town, but not the house! (Its OK, but I really want some acreage)

With a bridge it would cost you much more.
Many Americans (and Canadians) come to live in Mexico, specially in places like Mazatlan because the climate but mainly because their money does more here.

Yeah, I know. Mexico is not a bad place, from what I here, if you stay in the right areas (beyond that, if you don't look and act native.... watch out). However, I prefer the places that only used to be Mexico

.

Also, do you have a schedule of bookings yet? (MUCH more likely to get to CA than NY city!)

There is an ice cream shop here where I got an organic home-made avacado ice cream with himalayan pink salt. MMMMM.
The to biggest differences I've noticed so far are
1: wildlife. Maplewood was teming with squirrels, with occasional rabbits, deer, racoons, possums, wild turkeys, groundhogs, not to mention the bird life, and the evening chorus of cicadas/katydids/crickets. Here I've seen the north end of a south-facing lizard as itr scuttled off, and what may have been a prarie dog or a gopher - dissappeared to quick to tell. Plus eagles or sump'n (too far away to tell) and a brace of pigeons.
2: There are more swimming-pool supplies shops than nail salons.

Visit some of the local parks, even the city ones, for wildlife... not sure exactly where you are, but there should be more than what you are seeing immediately. One thing, though.. most wildlife tends to key in on water. Even a small stream with just a bit of vegetation around it will suffice. The water and vegetation are key.

Yeah, not much water here right now. Most of the stuff I saw was near an old gravel quarry which has been turned into a lake.
