On the hospitality of the Japanese, you're spot on. I found the VAST majority of the people there very hospitable to us when we were out on the town.
Any thoughts on Sake anyone? Talk about a bad hangover. UGH. I found the tale is true to drink it at room temp as well. Chilled it really didn't go down well.

I remember my Uncle made his own hard cider from his apple trees on his property. My cousin & I used to sneak some when we were kids.
He had a couple 2 and 3 gallon oak barrels. Usually, out of a 10gal batch (or thereabouts), he would fill one of the barrels. Then come winter (those COLD northeast winters) he would put a barrel outside. Once it froze, he would tap it and what didn't freeze was his strong "Applejack Brandy" as he called it.
Warm that up, fill up a rocks glass, and throw a cinnamon stick in there. Then all you have to do is get a fire going in the fireplace and RELAX........

Good brewers there, that means good beer.
I've actually never been inside, but they show up to the CT River Brew fest every year. That's where I first found them.
I have a bottle of that in my fridge right now! An excellent brew.

Yeah, the Delirium is excellent. The ceramic bottle is a nice touch too, although like Rogue's Double IPA, I think it makes it more expensive than it needs to be.

Speaking of IPA, I just picked up a 12-box of Magic Hat hI.P.A. Very good brew. I love IPA...my style of choice.

Ah yes, hard to go wrong with a good IPA. I'm currently enjoying Long Trail's unfiltered IPA.

i've had sake on a couple of occasions. warm, as tradition dictates, din't do much for me. i could drink it w/ food ok so as to have something to soak it up in my gut. just by itself was a little rough on me. The most amazing thing about japan was the vending machines though. You can get beer, sake, not to mention all manner of soft drinks out of those things. but it doesn't just end there, by far the strangest was used womens panties. ughgh just weird and wrong
Sake is like any liquor. Drink the cheap stuff and it's full of fusels, etc that cause headaches. Drink the good stuff, and you feel MUCH better the next morning.

Dang, how did I miss this thread until now. Goodness. I like all of them but not Tequila. Bad bad bad time with that once about 5 years ago and still brings back bad memories. Eww.
Liquor of choice is mostly whiskey at number 1, then vodka and gin. Most mixed drinks are great.

We used to be real good friends, but we had a kind of "falling out" many years ago when I "over indulged".
Now, I can only really stomach the top shelf stuff: Corazon Reposado or Cabo Wabo, and even those in modest quantities...

Funny you mention Scotland.
I've always been real interested in their history and culture. Especially when it comes to the making of Ales & Spirits. They were limited in what they were able to do because of the climate and terrain, and yet were able to produce some of the tastiest beverages the world has to offer.
There's nothing like enjoying a Wee Heavy with a big meal in the winter time, followed by an 18-year old Scotch by the fire......
