Look, the best rock group in the world is CLEARLY Muse.
Yeah!
I agree with those two guys.

It frightens me that nobody has even mentioned The Grateful Dead. Seems like everyone is just force-fed music (if you can call it that) through the radio. Sad.
However, the answer is obviously Led Zeppelin...there will probably never be a band filled with that much talent ever again. One should also take into consideration that a defining attribute of a great band is their live show. Some bands just play their songs verbatim, but great bands can alter their songs and improvise over them during a live performance...that's where Led Zeppelin and The Grateful Dead come into being. One more band that fits that bill is Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Immensely underrated.

The Beatles, a "young upstart pretender band"? Who do you like, Lawrence Welk?
OK, maybe that wasn't too clear
Let me re-write that:
I can't believe all the young upstart pretender bands that have been mentioned, like Arctic Monkeys etc A band has to have a history before it can be classed as a great.
My nominations are:
Iron Maiden
The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
AC/DC
Rush
Hope that clears things up a bit

What strange, strange people. Led Zeppelin are somewhat overrated. I blame that on the magnificence of "Stairway to Heaven".
Anyway, I'll start with the three obvious choices.
Pink Floyd
The Doors
Radiohead
The last two are tricky slots to fill as there are many great bands, but I think I will go with an honest approach and pick genius talent over personal preference.
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
These are the five greatest, most original bands to have graced this earth. Blessed with natural talent and musical proficiency, to pure music aficionado's, with understanding of genius, there hasn't been better than this.

Every member of Led Zeppelin is more musically proficient than their counterpart in The Rolling Stones. With John Bonham being one of the greatest and most influential rock drummers ever. It sounds like you have only listened to Stairway to Heaven...I honestly don't even like that song too much and I prefer their first two albums.
Also, I don't deny that The Rolling Stones are talented and that they are a great band...it's just that when you see Led Zeppelin live and you see The Rolling Stones live, you can tell which ones know their way around their instruments better and which ones are more cohesive and which ones can just fucking rock. That would be Led Zeppelin for all three. And if you wanna talk about studio output...I think that Zeppelin has them there as well, but that's just my opinion.
