Gang, ol' Saxi here. I think I need to put on the daddy pants in this thread and get everyone to just hug it out.

So that we can get over all the racism and nation-baiting in this thread I'm going to start telling jokes about Dutchers. That way we can all come together using humor as a peacemaker.

IMO, JJ, Romania deserves total absolution from WWII.

It was the typical treachery of Britain that forced Romania into the camp of the Nazi cult. Verily, it was Romanian courage and stoicism that allowed the maintenance of their bridgehead to Poland by which the Polish forces were able to evacuate from the invasion by the British-backed Nazi cult and continue the fight against imperialism. Contrast the bravery of the Romanian people against the Dutchers who surrendered to the British-backed Nazi cult in 89 hours flat (and would have surrendered 88 hours sooner had a telegraph line not gone out).

I am not slighting or implicating or condemning Romania. I hold no negative opinions towards Romanians. A wealth of history in that country.

Wow, nice to know that you bouth know how it realy was. We joined the natzis cause he had no choise, we where sorrounded, and abandoned.We where about to have the same fate as poland(we were divided betwen Germany and Russia). russia took some of our norden teritories an hungary took transylvania.The first military action along the germans was taking the norden terits back, and we went further in russia hoping that Hittler will agree to give back transylvania.
After the war we were once again divided now betwen The Allies and Russia at Yalta, when Romania got 90% russian control and 10 % western control.

I wouldn't ever think that a big wave would be caused by terrorists, but the American media have made an excellent job of scaring the bejesus out of Americans to fear anything and everything, all in the name of; Terror. The War on Terror. Terrorists.

I dont feel as strongly as pedronicus but i agree with a lot of what he has said.

My personal opinion is no, i do not hate America and i certainly dont hate Americans.

However, America, both its leaders and its people, for the most part, possess an unattractive arrogance sparked by the blissful ignorance that America is invincible and somehow better than anywhere else.

This isnt true. There have been copious superpowers in history, some much larger than America. And as America will, they all fell. America has done many great achievements, has some brilliant people and some lovely landmarks. But thats not more than can be said about any other country.

So i like America, and its people. I just dont like the misplaced arrogance. (Some call it patriotism, but i disagree with that)

Its hard to argue with the last post , his point has been heavily endorsed by the patriotic nonsense already seen in this thread. As for the constant whining about terrorists , how many of you have come close to personaly experiencing terrorism , well I have and in my view a lot of you are hypocrites. You didn't give a damn when US dollars ( collected in New York and Boston ) funded the IRA and you turned a blind eye when they bombed British cities for over a decade , yet when it happens on US soil.......

Are the Brits arrogant? Are the French arrogant? Are Israelis arrogant? I would argue yes. Of the non-US people I have come into contact with, the vast majority of them are proud to be [insert country of origin]. Even in the US, among my own relatives, most of the Greeks are proud to be Greek first and proud to be American second.

Are the Brits concerned with themselves first? Sure. I suspect that in Pedro's scenario, an idiot Brit woman might yell out "Is it the terrorists?!?" Or maybe she might say, "Is it the Luftwaffe?!?"

I really do think the rest of the world hates Americans because we tend to impose our own foreign policies on others. I think the "stupid/ignorant Americans" thing is more of a reaction to hating us than a reason for hating us.

All Superpowers impose their polocies on other countries, and yes it might be a reason for disdain.

And i do agree that all countries have those which are patriotic and those which are gingoistic or even racist. I even work with a racist. But all countries tend to have characteristics which apply to a vast majority (or at least significant number) of that countries population.

One of America's defining features is its Arrogance and lack of recognition for the outside world. Now this in it self is totally unfair. There are many students of geography, history and various other practices in America. Equally a lot of Americans are only patriotic and do not look down on other countries.

But i think its fair to say that a lot of Americans or a VERY vocal few give the image that they are the best, live the american dream, they have the only culture worth knowing, their guns are bigger etc etc.

That charicteristic is unattractive, boring and irritating.

Im not trying to be offensive, i like America and almost all of the Americans i have met.

Also i havent coveredf the fact that America is not in itself just one culture but a mix of states which in turn are a mix of cultures and so this gereralisation i have made is just that, a generalisation and not applicable to individual states.

So, you believe that the average American has the following negative characteristics:

(1) Arrogance about their own country; and
(2) Lack of recognition for the outside world.

Maybe this is true about the average American. I also happen to think it's true about the average Canadian, Mexican, Brit, French, Israeli, Greek, etc. I have met people from all of those countries and they are all concerned about their own country, more specifically their own situation, than they are about situations in other countries. And they are all arrogant about their own countries (especially Greeks and Israelis). Now, this is based on my own experience, which, frankly, is a better indicator of these characteristics than what I would hear or view on some sort of website or news media outlet.

Truth: The monies you cry about being collected here in the US that funded the IRA was collected by and sent home (Ireland) by the Irish people who had family and political interests in Ireland.

You blame Americans and America for this? I seem to recall our gov spending some of our resources fighting the IRA and it's financers here in the US.
