That new classic map is... horrifying

It must be temporarily, no other option...

how can you have a copyright on the word card???? Oh well, the official name doesn't matter anyway, everyone will still call them cards, or i will at least.

BTW, a "world 1.0" revamp of classic should be possible without copyright infringement. But it will have to be tucked away and not a major feature of the site (definitely not on the first page) to that in addition to copyright, you don't have trademark and trade-dress issues.

Now, on a more significant note - what is this centerscapes crap. I want back the Middle-fuxin-Earth Map!

And is this all just because one of she-who-must-not-be-named's multi's came trolling around here a few days ago, or was there a cease and desist letter? If no cease and desist, that the site is way freakin' over-reacting.

Dont give Wicked and IPH the satisfaction. They WANT people to panic. They WANT people to be upset with them.

They haven't done anything. They are claiming "victory" but what have they accomplished? Changing of 2 maps and a few terms yet the game stays the exact same? Big deal.

Being sued is no laughing matter. If there were even the hint that it might happen, I'd do the same thing they've done - pull the maps, words, and anything else that is in question, until things are sorted out.

Sure it sucks, but given the number of talented mapmakers around here, I'm sure something new can be created to replace the two maps we've lost. In the meantime, let's play on - there are still 98 other maps that are intact!!

More than 98 now. And yes I'm sure the site will come up with different maps soon enough, but the community still is a bit on edge from the sudden change...it's just a shock.

Well, if this really IS a preemptive measure, and not something begun by Hasbro taking action, it's probably BECAUSE the powers that be of CC are about to pursue serious legal action against those two and doing this helps prevent getting things tied up in counter suits.

Well...kill the games. Because the Middle Earth map is effin horrible. Just numbers and lines. Seriously...there was nothing that could be comparable? Nothing?

Are game rules protected by copyright? I am not a lawyer. But from my understanding, case law and copyright treatise would indicate no. Copyrights protect implementations, not ideas. The line between ideas and implementations is not always well defined, but in the case of games, it is widely held that rules and game play are not copyrightable.

Edit- Maybe if this whole copyright thing is true we should be more constructive instead of bitching and trying to make the most posts in a thread in a record time. IM sure with the 20,000 people on this site we can help bring cc back to its once greatness.

May I ask if this is a joke or really a serious thing?

As I understood it the Classic map was completely originally made, just that it happened to look similar to one of the Risk maps. Then it would not be infringing copyright since there can only be copyright on a specific design. No-one can claim copyright on a map over the world with dots and lines connecting the areas.

I can certainly understand if the persons responsible for the site don't want to go to court about it, but if you really have been threatened for the Classic map this is truly the final drop that makes the whole copyright scheme look completely fucking ridiculous and I will never support Hasbro in any way again. In addition I will truly make an attempt to hurt them and copyright itself in any way possible.

Right, but this may have nothing to do with Hasbro at the moment. I'm beginning to think it really is a prophylactic measure for the shitstorm they're planning on raining down upon the two "terrorists".

They are claiming a victory when they have merely changed two maps and some terms. Big fuckin' deal.

No - you don't want to get caught with you pants down on this, but really, people have talked about this stuff on and off forever. If you pull down the content you are admitting an issue. For Middle Earth, that's probably the only choice, but for Classic this is the wrong call (and I hate classic). You have to wonder what actually is going on in the back room. I have heard of someone sending a cease and desist letter to a company that made Apple Pie. The guy who did it even said he didn't have a strong case, but the pie-company actually allegedly stopped making the pie in question. The lawyers main point: each successful "defense" strengthens future claims (in this case, he would have an easier time down the road to enforce his client's exclusive right to an apple pie of a particular size (LOL).

Twill should take his own advice and talk to a really qualified IP lawyer.

I don't ever play classic, but this site will be hurting for sure if they don't get a basic world territory map up in 1 weeks tops.

And it is possible to control the rights to a game process - more that it would be a trade mark issue, process patent maybe, or copyright of the written rules of the game. Very unlikely that words like "card", "attack", "conquer" and "dice" can be subject to copyright. The main legitimacy of those assertions will be from this site overreacting and pulling stuff wholesale.

Again, CC do yourself a favor and go talk to qualified counsel before you shoot yourself in the foot.

I'll give everyone 2 guesses as to whom is the likely culprit to cause these latest changes... but I think you'll only need one guess.

In my time with CC I've been one of the most vocal players when it comes to questioning the dice (much to Twill's dismay, I might add).
However, in this latest round of changes, I have to give Lack the benefit of the doubt, and support the decisions he makes in order to avoid actions which could take CC offline.

The Map Foundry has an enormous amount of talent and ability, and I'm certain that a suitable replacement for Classic and Middle Earth will be up and running ASAP.

Keep in mind that Lack created this site from a mere idea, and it's now one of the liveliest game sites on the web.
This Community grew because we all share a common interest in the game.

As a unique Online Community, now is a good time to trust that the recent changes were necessary and, rather than bitch and moan and groan about about everything, we have the opportunity to voice a collective "f*ck you!" to those who have brought about the need for the radical changes in OUR site!

I support Lack, and think that everyone should just chill the hell out and be patient!

plus the new look of the dice....what's your opinion?
