so... did you all really spend $650 for photoshop CS3, or is there something I'm not getting? Because I'd love to have it, and used it in my school's Journalism room all the time, but the price seems a little much... I'm making do with a port of GIMP for Mac right now...

but seriously... $650? really? All I want is essentially elements plus layers and an alpha channel... but layers cost $540 extra?

I've got elements 3.0.
I know that a few people in this competition have a copy of CS3 that isn't legal.
Elements has layers. If you are talking about layer styles, you can replicate most of them fairly easily. At least I can make most of the effects that I've seen done by layer styles. It just takes a bit of extra work. no Alpha channels, though.

Hmm... trying out the version of Elements on my parents' year-old Mac, I couldn't do anything with the layers, or edit the alpha value of anything. Hmm... but maybe I was being dumb. I'll have to look at that further some time.

try gimp it should be good

I can get Adobe Photoshop Extended CS3 - Student Edition for PC off amazon for £123, partly down to student discounts I think. mac is a bit more but still under the £140 mark (which is what, $260 or so?)

Yeah, I've been using a port of GIMP for Mac. It is very useful, and does everything I want it to, but the interface isn't nearly as easy to use. Also, since GIMP isn't made for Macs, it just doesn't feel right, and doesn't work like a Mac program. Photoshop CS3 for Mac is really sleek and easy. The GIMP port is just too... clunky, as a non-native program.

So, I'll check out Amazon, see if there really is photoshop CS3 for so cheap. Extended, for only £123...

That's a link directly to the education store on adobe's site. 299 for CS3.

If you are using it professionally however, and want to write it off on your taxes as a business expense, then I believe you have to pay full price.

so, do any of you guys (preferably someone good) want to play a small 1v1 version of this through PMing?
This long wait is killing me.
We could play a 1v1 with PMs, so it'll go faster. Then post everything in the forums and add a poll to decide the winner.
We'd use different rules, though. decided through PM.

PM me or post here if you are interested. Only do it if you will have a lot of free time, though, so we aren't waiting so long in between rounds.
