You asked scientist before and although similar in a lot of ways to inventor, it's possible to be an inventor without being a scientist. Especially before the 19th century. He's neither of it though.

I know you said he will be hard to figure out by asking about his profession, but it's pretty to hard to guess who somebody is if we don't know what that somebody is, especially if it's somebody from a long time ago.
