Yesterday Mrs Curl visited with various old friends in the UK and they all phoned us up after getting home from a curry, while getting themselfves on the outside of a bottle of wine or two... it sounded like fun. Later today Mrs Curl moves on to Paris on business, via the Chunnel.

Actually my kids are sometimes sickeningly polite.

They say "Thank You" as often as well-mannered Brits are taught to say it (far more than US people, which can make Brits think you're impolite at times), and also reply to every "Thank You" with "you're welcome", as polite persons in the US do (but which never happens in the UK - you just wait for your next opportunity to say "thank you". This can cause US persons to think that Brits are ungrateful.)

UK style:
Hand item to cashier. Cashier says "thank you".
Cashier rings up sale. Hands bill to customer. Customer says "thank you".
Customer hands over credit card. Cashier says "thank you"".
Cashier asks customer to enter pin code. Customer does so. Cashier says "thank you".
Cashier gives card back with receipt. Customer says "thank you".
Cashier bags item gies it to customer. Customer says "thank you".

US Style:
Customer hand item to cashier, cahier hands bill to customer, customer hands over credit card, cashier requests pin number, customer supplies it, cashier gives customer item, credit card and recipt. Customer says "thank you". Cashier says "you're welcome. have a good one." Customer (possibly) says "you too".

I like the Swahili version of polite:

you don't thank people for doing their jobs.

If you go to say Kenya, and learn enough Swahili to talk to the locals, they will be very puzzled if you thank them at any point in the above transactions. Or if you thank a waiter etc. (the Swahili for "thank you" incidentally is "asante". If I remember right.)

IN Swahili you say "thank you" when the thing that the other person has done is worthy of comment, i.e. beyond their job or duty. That is when real thanks are due.

I quite like this idea. But, if you speak to people in English there they will still expect a "thank you" at appropriate Brit "thank-you" places. If you speak to them in Swahili they don't.

I have no idea what Swahili speakers think of Americna politeness.

Perhaps the president-elect could tell us?

No comment may be a comment but it's merely commenting that I have nothing to say to that part of the post which in itself is a comment and therefore just there to tell you that I do not have anything of substance to say to it but do not want you to think that I was ignoring your comment by not posting my own comment.

did you know....

If you are an average American, in your whole life, you will spend an average of 6 months waiting at a red light.

If you lived in Seaford on the English south coast, the waits at red lights would be the most exciting time of our life.

Finals have started.

round 1 goes to me.

Trig. final probably got a better grade on the final than I had on any other by a good 5 points.

Strike wolf's video game moment of the week.

So I was playing Left 4 Dead last night with some friends (2 of them on-line) and we were playing on normal so that we could get some achievements that would be harder to come by on advanced and almost impossible on expert. Anyways we were on the No Mercy stage and we had reached the final level and the helicopter had arrived. We distracted the horde with a pipe bomb but unfortunately one of our guys got caught by a smoker. Being the heroic idiot I was I decide to help him out. Then right after I do, I get attacked by a tank. He leaves me to die and I end up being the only one not to survive the mission.

I would like to say that up until dying there, I was kicking ass. I killed 2 witches and a tank by myself and only had to use one med-kit throughout the mission.
