Russia is an enormous exporter of gas, oil etc. Take away that income and see how much power Russia gets from its wheat. If Russia only 'trades for convenience' then why did it just sign a gas deal with China that is heavily weighted against Russia? Why is Russia so desperate to launch a successful common economic zone covering Russia and its old Soviet vassals? Why is the Russian economy in danger of recession in the wake of Crimea?

Plus, no one is going to 'slam the door' on China so that scenario is irrelevant.
