As a world history teacher I do not equate the Soviet Union and Russia (just as I do not equate Ancient Greece with modern Greece) but we do not have maps of the Russian Federation or modern Greece so I needed to use older versions of countries to get across those maps in the race.

Fewest games = fewest rounds? since all players would need to win 3 for each map to advance if I read that correctly.
