People who are hostile to slavery are not assholes. People who are hostile to injustice are not assholes. People who are hostile to political mendacity are not assholes. People that are hostile to ignorance are not assholes. People that are hostile to misogyny are not assholes. People that are hostile to tyranny are not assholes. People that are hostile to hubris in government officials are not assholes.

There are many legitimate reasons for hostility. You cannot delegitimize the tactic of hostility, you must address the object of the hostility to evaluate its reasonableness. Just like you cannot have a war on a tactic like terrorism. get it.

Notwithstanding your long history of being a proven pusillanimous type of breathtaking yet ever so slightly odd person, with a highly developed aptitude for ensuring your victories ,taking your highly inflammatory sig off, and responding in the forum as though you are some kind of weird serene intellectual does not stop you being a complete perfect human being Klobby.

I for one can only agree with you fully and wholeheartedly, Hostility is a terrible thing.

The difference in CC (or Risk here) is that wether you win or not in this game is often totally outside of your control. Its a game of dice and cards and , sometimes, clueless opponents who sometimes decide who wins. Even the best players can never be in control of how they will fare.
The badges and points enforce the competiveness. The ability to anominously bad mouth and degrade a person enables us all to 'act badly' sometimes.
But . . in the end its only a game. If you want enlightenment and an uplifting experience I suggest staying away from open games and perhaps just playing people you like to play with and forget the forumn here altogether. There is usually very little here to make anyone 'feel' better about playing Risk.

I like to improve my game by putting on ignore anybody that beats me ---- have you tried that ?

I quite agree there is a lot of hosility in here. I find most of this in the forums, rather than in the game itself (unless you happen to land in soct-land's games)! I suppose thats because peeople cant really communicate properly and actually portary what they neeed to say in their writing's.

That said i play poker alot and the wors ive seen is

player A is disconnected

Player B, i hope he is disconnected coz his house is on fire and he is burning to death

or

i hope you get cancer and die fish!

well, well, well... shouldn't Klobb's be allowed to point out what he sees as examples of why the forums are so hostile? i think he has a valid point, to a degree. i don't believe the OP asked "why is it so hostile around here, give me some reasons as you see. however, if it involves the moderation, don't mention it." klobber stayed on topic, made some valid points, and you really can't fault him or question him on what he stated. when you had a now EX mod running rough shod over the forums, as if it were her own wild west. picking and choosing which rules to interpret, which members to punish, and when to implore "unwritten rules", you can't deny that led to the current hostile state. i myself am to blame for some of the degradation, and have taken it upon myself to stay on topic, limit the acerbic remarks, and give the mods a heads up whenver something needs to be tended to. you can not declare klobbers statement false. afterall, the sites shining "global moderator" turned this place into a cesspool and caused more havoc and damage to the site, than any other "offenders" of the forum rules. klobber has a point, and it should be taken into consideration as one of the factors that led to where the forums are now.-0

I would tend to think it has to do with the relative level of anonymity. Perhaps on those chess sites, people aren't able to thoroughly conceal their identities.

Gee, not the least bit prejudiced, are we?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but most of the arrogant pricks are young, obviously WEALTHY males.

And, you might try looking beyond your narrow realm of experience to what real people actually think and do. You obviously have no clue.

General Quigley wrote:I have played at other gaming sites that have forums, but among all of them none have a more unfriendly and hostile tone than the one constantly on display at this website. Does anyone know why this would be?

I don't think it's because of the competetive nature of the game. Chess is more competetive, deeper, and requires greater skill and emotional investment than does Conquer Club. All chess site forums I have seen are much different than forums here. Most have forums that are an uplifting, friendly, and positive place to be, and have nice discussions going on about best moves in certain situations, etc. Also, many young people engage in chess on the internet. So, I don't think it's just the prepubescent age pool Conquer Club appears to draw heavily from.

Does anyone have a solid idea of why people's attitudes at this site suck so completely?

Thanks.

General Quigley

I chaulk it up to a lot of younger males who like to say things here in a somewhat "safer" environment than "real life". Here, the worst that will happen is either getting a "talking to" by someone else or perhaps a ban. MUCH safer than cursing your parents or the "idiot" neighbor who insists on playing their music too loud, etc.

BUT, I would also say you have to look deeper. There are some quite nice folks here, but those few jerks are just more noticeable.

You don't watch a lot of SNL, do you?

Prejudiced, sure I admit it. I am biased towards people who work for a living and have no time for the pompous rantings of the petty and the culture fundamentalists. Also, where is your evidence that I am a younger male, or anyone else on CC for that matter?

Come now, bosom friend.

What would make you say such hurtful and untrue things about me? "Slander and flaming," in my posts? In reality, you are perceiving what is in your own consciousness, and falsely attributing it to mine. This is sad but true, dear chum.

I hope you have a wonderful day!
