I'm really glad that you are starting to feel better. I think you were handling it well though. There are others that would have complained much worse. Hopefully soon you will get back all the things that you normally did.

Lyme's is a nasty disease. I have friends and colleagues who had cases. My two sons have had it, but thankfully they got it quick.

One thing I DID want to say ... the bull's eye rash is often absent. I took my son in for what looked like a big mosquito bite that seemed to be spreading a bit. Though I am QUITE familiar with the western version of Lyme's, I was more suspecting of staph than anything else.

Thank heavans our doctor has seen it many times before. My sons got put on antibiotics right away and have had no further problems.

Since then I know of 10 other kids just in our circle of friends and acquaintances who had to be treated.

on House last night (a repeat), House ruled out Lyme's because there was no rash. I was screaming at the TV... NOOOO!!!

Yeah docs out here aren't very well-versed on it, as it's pretty rare in the PAC NW. The most ironic thing is I got this about a year after I moved out here, when I'd lived most of the rest of my life in the NE and SE, two places with high incidences of Lyme's and other tick-borne diseases. There's currently a HUGE controversy over how to treat chronic cases, or cases where it's not caught right away, like mine. There's been a lot of media coverage on that lately.

Lyme Disease often is found without the expanding bull's eye rash, Erythema Migrans. It can be debilitating with severe neuromuscular symptoms. It is spreading and we've treated many cases here in upstate NY. There are also other tick borne diseases like Borrelia, Erlichiosis and in the West, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

The American Lyme Disease Foundation publishes a map of Lyme disease risk showing the gradual spread of Lyme disease across the United States. Over 50% of the people now tested are positive for Lyme organisms, although many of them may temporarily be asymptomatic. Merck researchers observe Lyme mycoplasma in over 95% of the population.

Lyme disease is unlike any other syndrome on the planet. Alternative practitioners note that it is more difficult to treat than cancer. The reason for this is that it is a complex of thousands of viruses, parasites, fungi, mycoplasma, and other organisms. It appears to be designed to be undetectable in the early stages, untreatable, and eventually, permanently disabling. It is also gets worse if treatment is attempted, a phenomenon observed in the Herxheimer reactions noted by those who try to treat their Lyme disease. Frequencies need to be carefully designed to avoid these reactions as much as possible.

During 1991-2002, the reported incidence of Lyme disease nearly doubled. Most cases continued to occur in northeastern, mid-atlantic, and north-central states, and the largest population of cases continued to be reported among persons aged 5-9 years and 50-59 years, possibly as a result of greater exposure than other groups to infected ticks, less frequent use of personal protective measures, differential use of health-care services, and/or reporting bias.
