One thing I'm worrying about is a review I saw for an HP notebook (not the same one I'm thinking of), the customer's laptop went pretty haywire and shutdown-ey on itself within the first few days, and he's convinced that the entire brand is of the same quality.
...and Lenovo has just come to my attention, any experience with that?
Well, I have an HP PC (not a laptop) and that has never happened to it. Though, one of those damn Myspace things unleashed some sort of virus and now an add or five pop up offering Anti-Spyware for $29.99 every few minutes.
And I don't believe I have heard of Lenovo.

Alright that's a bit comforting heh. I guess that guy must have just gotten a buggy one.
Ever try a virus scan or something?

Lenovo is the old IBM. I've had a thinkpad for two years now and love it. Dropped it once and it still works great. I travel with it frequently and it gets banged up and still no problems. And I like the fingerprint recognition to open it because I suck at remembering passwords. Oh yeah, I bought a low end model and it doesn't seem "cheap" at all like a Dell does to me.

Good good, heh all of a sudden I think "not feeling cheap" is becoming more of an important factor for me. I hate the Dells at our school.

Well, HP definetly looks best, especially since it has 4 GB RAM.

It's basically the laptop that I brilliantly bought for 910$, but cheaper and better. Darn lucky Americans!
Just kidding mate, I'm glad for you.

Thanks.
I'll lobby for bestbuy to start a global market?

Well, a little known fact is that now Macs can have a windows OS installed on them and you can choose which to run, so that might narrow yours down a little.
/edit: The only downside, and according to your field, the disqualifier, is that Mac laptops start at $1100 minimum.
