So my prediction is that California wine will be the best in another 50 years but for now the French have it. Sorry - and I say that with extra regret because I am playing against those very same French now! lol

Agree...but my friend I have traveled the world as a young buck as well...
A wise man once said California has better soil, grapes...but the French have better winemakers/wine. I do like to poke fun...France, Italy, California are all places I could survive comfortably
Fun fact: many good CA wines use French Oak so theoretically the best wines IMO are CA/FR.

I have tried far more wines than I know the names of. I'll stick to my spirits and beers. Knowing me, one day all I'll drink is wine. I didn't like coffee until I was around 16 and now I live off the stuff.

It's quite hard to discuss about wine because it's all terribly chauvinistic subject. What wine? What arewe comparing? it can go from .40€ euro cents to 100 000€ euros a bottle or so. And none of us here have what it takes to drink the finest bottles and apreciate them as they should.
It all comes down to your usual standards and the price range you usually buy your bottles for. French wines don't have a great price/quality ratio for compared to other for most part.... people don't all have the same taste either. There are so many type of wines that are meant for specific foods, or specific time of the day... Where and when you drink it is extremely important.

So being as generic as saying that wines from a certain country are better than another country is extremely moot.
