Screw Tibet. Screw the Dali Llama. Tibet was a backward poverty stricken shithole under the Llama's, well, except for the religious class, they lived without want. Everyone else, not so much. This current Dali Llama is reduced to basically a famous beggar with a metaphorical sign that says "Will give enlightenment for revolution". The son of a bitch used to be on the CIA payroll until it got found out he was on the CIA payroll.

So yeah, if the Dali Llama wants to go around preaching his religion and scamming out people of their hard earned monies, so be it, I wish him luck. If he wants everyone else to go in and "free" Tibet (by the bayonet BTW, so much for nonviolence), well he can go pound sand. He doesn't deserve to be the religious and political leader of a country. He's a con man from my perspective. Be a priest or be a ruler, don't try to be both. That doesn't work out so well for the average person.
At least under the Chinese the average Tibetan can now probably read and write taught by Chinese schools. Sure they get a Commie education but at least it's somewhat of an education instead of being perpetual serfs under the thumb of religious monks. Now they are half educated perpetual serfs under Commie Chinese thumbs.

Either way, the Tibetan people are screwed. I don't see why we should prefer they get screwed by the Dali Llama over the Chinese. At least the Chinese are giving the small comfort of Vaseline, a comfort the monks would forgo.

IMO.

Reading about pre-1951 Tibet, it sounds to me very much like Europe during the Middle Ages. The monasteries had great power and a disproportionate share of the wealth, to be sure, but they were not tyrannical. The vast majority of the people were tenant farmers, and they have been called "serfs" or "slaves" by some commentators, but on close reading their condition seems a bit milder than what we called "serfdom" in Europe, and a LOT milder than real slavery. For starters, it was not a criminal offense for a "serf" to leave his land and go try his luck at being something else (either a monk or an artisan in one of the towns.) The only real deterrent was the loss of what little income his tenant farm provided.

Backward and poor it certainly was, but that's more a function of geography than politics. Most of the world's wealth is in coastal areas. Inland areas isolated from the easy wealth of the coasts are usually backward unless they have great mineral wealth, and Tibet doesn't have a lot of that, either. Coupled with the difficulty of farming narrow mountain valleys, Tibet was not destined to be a wealthy nation no matter what form of government it chose.

I suspect most of the people were happier feeding local monks than feeding distant overlords in Peking. And I really, really suspect that having their opinion be irrelevant was a lesser evil than having their opinion be something they could get executed for.

The last recorded examples I can find of people from Tibet being executed for anything was nearly ten years ago, when a few people were executed for taking part in Lhasa's 2008 riots.

With the amount of censorship that goes on in China, I sincerely doubt any of their latest atrocities are going to be known to the public.

1 - there are hundreds of thousands of protests in China every year
2 - something like 1 million British people marched against the Iraq War and Tony Blair went ahead and invaded Iraq anyway. Protests are overrated.
