Yeah, I can definitely second the allergy thing. Never had allergies until I moved to sacramento area and apparently that sort of thing is pretty common.

Here is a real time PERFECT example of what I was talking about...
...the blaring disconnect between people who are voting for higher taxes and the actual paying of the taxes........
“I’m at the breaking point,” said Gretchen Gardner, an artist who bought a 1930s bungalow in the Bouldin neighborhood just south of downtown in 1991 and has watched her property tax bill soar to $8,500 this year.
“It’s not because I don’t like paying taxes,” said Gardner, who attended both meetings. “I have voted for every park, every library, all the school improvements, for light rail, for anything that will make this city better. But now I can’t afford to live here anymore. I’ll protest my appraisal notice, but that’s not enough. Someone needs to step in and address the big picture.”
YOU ARE THE BIG PICTURE! Protest yourself and the other morons like yourself. Everyone in your neighborhood gets to stand in line to slap ya

So anyway, thanks all of you who tried to actually be helpful in this thread and by PM (and also various actors, comedians, and just generally people I know, outside of CC)-
I made my choice, the moving van just left with all my stuff in. I'll be there to meet it on August 15th. Bye, NJ! See ya!
Maybe I'll even have time to play some cc games once I get there.

Caught this thread a bit late. I'm in agreement that north of San Diego is the place to be (North County). I've lived here in Encinitas for about 12 years now and we absolutely love it! You have everything very close. Surfing and snowboarding in the same day, hiking, arts & culture, boating, fishing, camping, good night life and great restaurants.
The schools are good but traffic is absolutely terrible. Cardiff (by the Sea) is very nice too although you'll get more bang for the buck in Carlsbad.

I'm wondering too.

LOL...a few facts here:
CA has had one of the absolute best college systems in the world. Its no coincidence that Berkeley, UCLA, and even Stanford (yes, that last is a private college) all exist in CA. BUT, the real story lies not just with the tope tier (and note -- depending on the major, there are MANY, MANY stellar tiers there), but in the whole base that supports those tope few. In CA you can get up to a 2 year degree almost for free, INCLUDING a large number of technical specialities (ranging from plumbing and contracting to diving, to firefighting to architecture and nursing to... almost anything).
CA boasts BOTH one of the most premiere highway systems AND a phenomenal system of state and national parks. It produces so much produce that if it were a country, it would rank in the top 10 of producing
countries. It also boasts diverse industry, etc, etc, etc....
ALL of that is not happing in spite of the tax system, but BECAUSE they have had a heavy tax supported bse.
Yes, people complain about taxes...but they also move to CA precisely because of all things those taxes provide.

A good location, though expensive. Be sure to go to Point Reyes, Muir Woods, .. basically head up the coast.
Also down to Montery Aquarium... Yosemite, Big Trees, etc, etc, etc.....
Shoot.. hard to go bad with travel, there. Or culture, or.... the only thing you really need is $$

Oddly enough I'm going to a party this afternoon thrown by friends here in NJ to say "Goodbye" (or was that "Good Riddance"?). Desperate to find some tasty tidbit to take, I defrosted some chicken and then (with all spices and condments in the lorry on the way to Ca) dusted it with some powdered raspberry iced tea. The result is amazingly good, though I think it'll be better when it's cold.
Also made some salmon spread from what happened to be left - salmon, unsalted butter, mascarpone, garlic, anchovy paste. I'll report back later on how that goes.
Off now to buy a ton of booze , two jars of Vaseline, a recording of Beethoven's Fifth, a Viking hat and a riding crop. I know how to party too.

But it's on zillow.com now if you look for Maplewood rentals, 5+ bedrooms.

I may even become premium again once I have a little leisure after I move. I LIKE those Risk-type games, I just haven't had time for a long while.
