This is rather naive given the propensity of the United States government to acquiesce to the whims of businesses who give them money. I mean, you (and others) can keep saying "We're not going to stop people from posting links to things that entertain us" but the bill seems pretty clear to me that this is specifically within the purview of the bill, and if, when the bill becomes law (and the correct word is "when" not "if") there is a provision ostensibly protecting the small guys, that provision will be ignored by whatever regulatory body is chosen to administer said law.

laughingcavalier wrote:You have to ask yourself do you want to watch Hollywood movies, do you want professional journalists to cover news events around the world, do you want to read specialist magazines, do you want high quality textbooks? If you do you have got to support SOPA, PIPA
This is laughable bullshit and shows you don't know what you're talking about at all.
Firstly, let me just say I don't want to watch hollywood movies. Since when has hollywood produced anything original, anything that isn't pandering to the lowest common denominator and taking zero risks? All they do is mass-produce bullshit sequels and brainless action films for teh guys, or brainless rom-coms for teh chicks. And we're supposed to want to protect that drivel? Please.
Anyway, SOPA/PIPA will not protect the artists. The way the law is worded is so vague that it can easily be interpreted to mean that any website that contains any links to any copyrighted content, even if the links are posted by users, can be blocked in the US. SOPA/PIPA will not stop piratism, the pirates will just find ways around the blockings. What it will stop is free flow of information in the internet.
Intellectual property should be protected to some degree, but not at the expense of free speech. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, morons.
laughingcavalier wrote: Right now those works can be easily stolen and shared aross the internet without any regard or recompense to the people who created them. It will stop being economically viable to produce such work
Oh really? The music and movie industry is constantly harping on about how piratism is killing the industry, yet their profits are larger than ever. How is that possible?
And either way, if a business model cannot survive without severely limiting the rights of individuals, then that business model is flawed and needs to be changed.
Even now, there are plenty of artists and other content producers who succeed just fine, by using business models that are not from the stone age. The big corporations just don't want to adapt to an age where they no longer have control over how we entertain ourselves. They fear competition, they want a monopoly over our entertainment. So they and their bribed politicians try their best to drive the competition out.

The way they are currently written, SOPA and PIPA would definitely stop many of the things you mention in your first sentence making you 100% incorrect.
Sure SOPA/PIPA might be
aimed at the piracy sites (as it should be) but many other sites who aren't doing anything illegal will be taken out with this shotgun approach. The main problem with these two bills are that they make the owner of sites responsible for every piece of media on it... even it was uploaded by a user who they are not connected to.
Not to mention that it forces even more government control into corporations. If you already seem to have a problem with Google for "controlling our access to the internet" just wait until Google is being forced by the government to omit/block sites. Welcome to China.

So after wading through the crap i'm still not seeing any answer.
Does CC support SOPA & PIPA or not?
If they do, then see ya later CC.
Why would anyone want sites like Wikipedia and resources like WordPress/Joomla/phpBB to go away?

There's no way CC supports SOPA. I'm pretty sure if SOPA passes, Hasbro will set it's sights on conquerclub.com

Why would CC support it? It would be digging it's own grave.

I really like every Americam citizen I have ever met, but your government is beyond belief. America is already trying to police the world according to its own crazy laws. This is partly the fault of foreign goverment presenting whenever they ask. The UK currently has an extradition treaty with the US set up during the start of the "war on terror". The US refuse to ratify the treaty but Tony Blair forced it through, so now British citizens can be sent to America for prosecution for an offence not commited in America, that is not illegal in the UK.
Its intention was to fast track terror suspects but has now been used to get someone who ran a website which held links to film/music download sites. Not a crime in the UK and not done in the US.
To face a legal system, that by British standards is harsh and unfair. Punishments are much more severe and mental states/abilities of the accused are not treated fairly.
Now I know there will be a tirade of soft European/f**king liberals/you dont know the problems facing the world/its people like you. But crime rates/murder rates are lower in the entire of Europe and at a level the US can barely dream of achieving.

Hailing from China I had to chuckle, because at the other end of the scale one has no protection of copyright, licence, etc etc. So the 'Welcome to China' remark works both ways I'm afraid.
There's a healthy middle ground, wherein laws may be used to prosecute blatant disregard for intellectual property and so forth, yet may be overlooked for obvious ('everyday') occurrences that are considered part of social fabric, e.g. the CC forum.
It could be likened to the 'Unwritten Rules' of CC - where it's apparent there are players who cheat the system (yet don't fit-in to CC society) and the multitude of others who just happily play the game. It's hard to draft a defining law to prosecute that individual, yet it's blatantly obvious what a crook he is.
This is why Pedronicus should be God.

There's a pretty obvious answer for this. nietzsche saw cc.com and he thought that meant conquerclub. cc.com is comedycentral.

You guys don't get it... making this thread ostensibly about lackattack was just a clever ruse to get the thread looking like it's CC related and thus not get moved from GD. Thus guaranteeing higher visibility for it, possibly making more people aware of SOPA/PIPA.
Well played, nietzsche.

Comedy Central supports SOPA?

Their parent company certainly does I think!

The legislation may target that as well, who knows! I know some online games do not allow you to have usernames of real of people / copyrighted / trademarked. We'd all just change our usernames to:
Username1
Username1a
Username1b
And so on, cycling through the alphabet and higher digits. It'd be crazy.

I mean for serious you guys, the mighty government would never want to use a law aimed at big guys to punish a little guy... like... me...
Wickard v. Filburn, 317 U.S. 111 (1942), was a U.S. Supreme Court decision that recognized the power of the federal government to regulate economic activity. A farmer, Roscoe Filburn, was growing wheat for on-farm consumption. The U.S. government established limits on wheat production based on acreage owned by a farmer, in order to drive up wheat prices during the Great Depression, and Filburn was growing more than the limits permitted. Filburn was ordered to destroy his crops and pay a fine, even though he was producing the excess wheat for his own use and had no intention of selling it.
