The English also invented the Concentration Camp during the Boer Wars, didn't they?

WHAT? The British brought us gravity? How did they do that when they couldn't even stand firmly on the ground?
Also - the Greeks brought you the rest of that stuff. So suck it.
See edits. Pwnd.
Again, Isaac Newton didn't bring us gravity. Maybe he figured out what the hell made us not fly up into the sky... if so, kudos to him.
Here's why my ancestors did:
- Invented philosophy as a way to examine the word
- Invented literature and most, if not all, literary types
- Developed mathematics, including geometry and applied mathematics, as well as calculus
- Astronomy
- Medicine
- Democracy (real democracy)
- Education
- And, oh by the way - language. Two brief and relevant examples:
(1) Economy - from the Greek word oikonomia
(2) Democracy - from the Greek word demokratia
Okay the Athenians were the first to try a very limited democracy, but nothing we would recognise as a real democracy in modern times.Just look who had no voting rights, women, slaves and landless men, leaving virtually nobody..

This is true. However in the UK:
1432 - only male owners of property (wiki says property worth 40 shillings, which was apparently a lot of money back then) were entitled to vote
1832 - extended voting rights to adult males who rented propertied land of a certain value
1867 - enfranchised all male householders
1918 - "universal" suffrage
So, the UK had the same type of democracy as the Athenians from 1432 to 1918 (i.e. where only land-owning males could vote). That's 486 years and it took them until 1918. Just sayin'.

Equally true,I never claimed otherwise,or used the phrase 'real democracy".

greekdog, I've now copyrighted 'just sayin'. Cease and desist.
Apparently the Spanish beat Britain to concentration camps by about 10 years

Britain invented the Dutch East India Company though

and the Royal Niger Company and Rhodesia and heroin

We're all the Greek's bitches when it comes to civilisation.
But we have Monty Python, which means we beat them anyway.

Agreed. Python trumps Greece.

You!
When I was young, I used to hear about this stereotype of 'English people drink warm beer' and be all liiiike 'wtf that is teh lames why don't we chill it???'
But then I matured to drinking age, started drinking in pubs and realised that I vastly preferred not-particularly chilled ale to ice cold piss lager.
And I thought 'damn those foreigns, I'll drink what I like'.
Vote 'warm ale' for the win.

As a foreign, I approve this message. Warm beer is tasty. As in, you can actually taste the flavors. I've decided that USers chill their beer because they don't actually like the taste of beer. It suppresses the flavor. What's the point?

Well its a fairly subjective discussion since you can taste most of the flavours of something at ~7 degC which is moderately chilled. (also English pub ales are celler temp, not warm, they just seem warm compared to your gross lagers in the next tap over).
And my main beef with things like london pride etc is not the temperature but the lack of carbonation. Again just a preference thing, but I like bubbles in my beer.
Oh and that the english are kinda crap at brewing beer, one thing the americans are far better at (of course im talking micro-brew here, not macro), hell the americans (and to an extent New Zealanders since we are both hooked on the same thing atm) are even out performing the Europeans I reckon.

/agree 100%. Who would want to drink Bud Light at room temperature? Barf. You gotta mask that nastiness by chilling it. The best beer imo is a porter or stout (or any ale with real flavor) at room temperature. Delicious.
