It was gone in the 80s. I'm not kidding. Why do you think I get so uptight about the subject.

Yes, Its pretty much why I get bothered, too. However, what we cannot fix, we have to deal with.

This is an apologist response.

No, but we're talking about 300 million plus people's freedom. I remember the Patriot Act which was designed only to intercept suspected terrorist communications and had strict penalties against abusers of the law. Still libs were fond of quoting Benjamin Franklin who said,

Anyone who trades security for freedom deserves neither.

Now Obama is creating a law to be able to randomly eavesdrop on anybody he suspects (or doesn't suspect) of breaking any law and all of you apologists are letting him off the hook. It's the epitome of hypocrisy. Let's not get hung up on the Hitler/Obama comparison. The OP just said it for effect. The reality is that it is a sick idea for the government to think they need to be methodically intercepting people's internet transmissions.

I agree, but the problem is its been legal for companies and others to do this for profit, without very much control at all for years. Within the government, there are at least some basic controls.

Yes, you'll find that hidden in user agreements, privacy is often not 100 percent protected by these private companies. But private companies are very motivated by publicity and do not want to burn their users. It's really not much of an issue. The government is not a business and they don't operate within the inherent accountability parameters that are built into private enterprise. In fact in the past, companies have fought the govt to protect their image.

Also let's not confuse the issue. If you don't like private business's ability to access your records then that's a whole separate issue. Let's not muddy the waters just because you want to deflect from Obama's tyranny.

The government can add or remove controls at will.

Like when AT&T spied on Americans and Obama voted to grant them immunity from being sued by those Americans in exchange for a $1 million donation to his telemarketing/presidential campaign (after he promised his dullard supporters he wouldn't).

Oh f*ck me to tears...the Patriot Act was the biggest fuckover of the people in the history of this nation. FAR worse than this current legislation, which really only piggy-backs it.

Holy hell in a handbasket. Business has "inherent accountability parameters" but our government doesn't? Private companies do not want to burn their users? That may apply to individual companies who have an ethical individual or board in charge...but by and large, private companies really couldn't give a shit about their users, so long as the money keeps rolling in.

Yes, let's definitely not talk about what you don't want to talk about. Smart move.

I don't like any of it, but I am not sure what we can really do about any of it. I believe in fighting for what is right, but I don't believe in fighting giants with straw. (at least, until that straw is manufactured into a real, workable weapon).
