It's because they act like a hive mind. It's not like that's ALL they're doing though, but they do do that on a regular basis. And because the userbase is so interchangable (you know the posts you'll get when you make a thread) it can happen at any time of day. In terms of sabotage, well, the userbase is known to have plenty of hackers in it, and so the hive mind gets an idea, and a hacker(s) carry it out if the rest are too inept to. And then they post pictures of it, for the lulz.

The buzz is that there are so many impressionable scriptkiddies (/b/tards) sprinkled with some seriously sketchy dudes there. Add this to the fact that they are completely anonymous, and you have this organic, viral mob that can crash almost any site or server if they collectively turn their mind to it.

In fact, this amalgamation of people is called "anonymous", like some sort of hive mind. Usually they are fractionated and bicker amongst themselves, but every once in a while they can severely effect the "real world".

when have 4chan users ever affected anything but shitty furry websites? ps prank calling people does not count as affecting anything

You mean seriously endangering lives doesn't count as affecting anything in your world? Because 4chan has done so with their prank calling many times.

one time a prank call mugged me in an alley at gunpoint

other than that though i've never had my life endangered by a phone call

Which is thoroughly irrelevant to the FACT that MANY lives have been seriously endangered by these prank phone calls. If I recall correctly, there was even a thread about them here in Monkey Business some time back.

4chan's pretty commonly known, actually.

Obviously I don't know you, but you are a good example of someone I'm surprised knows about 4chan. To me, you really don't seem the type of person who would go there.

Not to know about it, no. But to be able to discuss it and to have a valid opinion of it, you must either go there or read quite a bit about it.

Well, reputation flows on the webs. You could of heard of 4chan once or twice and be able to know what goes there, and to know that many of the scum of the interwebs go there (not all are scum, but a lot are)

Hell, my boyfriend's friend used to visit 7chan and whore himself out there, and he's now going out with one of the admin's of 7chan. I don't know why anyone would put pictures of themselves up on a child porn site.

I don't go there. I was a network system administrator for the Air Force for about 15 years and I was in charge of the military's Top Secret European computer network for several of those. However, I'd probably know about it even if it weren't VERY relevant to my job, simply because they're frankly just common knowledge these days. I mean, there's nothing "hidden" about them...articles are written, etc...

could you please explain how anyone has been put in legitimate danger from a bunch of lonely nerds crank calling them en masse? PROTIP: some dude 1,000 miles away saying "i'll KILL you" does not mean that person's life is genuinely endangered

Google some of their pranks against hotels. Serious danger to innocents. The one that comes immediately to mind was when they pranked someone into driving their car through a hotel lobby's window.

Until given more information about that one, I contend that the driver is mostly to blame.

i think you're thinking of the guy who ran his own prank call website not affiliated with 4chan whatsoever, who tricked people into doing cuh-rrrrrrazzzzy things by aping authority figures

EDIT: found it, i actually posted about this guy here before

http://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=94024&p=2154594

Earlier this year Marquis offered a $500 bounty to anyone in the chat room who could succeed in getting someone to drive a car through the lobby window of a hotel. Remarkably, Malik did just that on May 27 at a Hampton Inn in York, Nebraska. Posing as a representative from a fire alarm company, Malik tricked a front desk worker into pulling the hotel alarm, which he claimed was malfunctioning and needed to be "reset." After the alarm sounded, he told the woman that the only way to stop the screeching was to break lobby windows, which supposedly contained sensors of some sort. As York Police Department Chief Donald Klug recalled, "A trucker was standing there and he offered to help and drove his truck through the front door."

No, I think you are absolutly right! But idle hands are the devil's workshop, and add anonymity with the ability to obtain the means through internet searches, or talking to more skilled assclowns, and then multiply that adolescent angst by a couple orders of magnitude, and you have real trouble.

This is why I called them scriptkiddies and not 1337 H4xx0rz. Mostly they just sit around masturbating, but when their collective focus gets sharpened on something they can do some damage.

So why do you have such a hard on for 4chan? U some sort of /b/tard fanboy?

I think he's the exact opposite. He thinks 4channers are suckers who don't go far enough.

You are correct, Sultan. I did mis-attribute that one to 4chan...good catch...that was precisely the incident I was thinking of. However, they are responsible for similar events.

And yes, MeDeFe, I don't at all discount the driver's own blame in that incident. He was pretty much a dumbfuck. But that doesn't absolve the prankster either.
