I told you that would happen once you put in all the terr names . . .
Yeah... I know....
but it IS one thing that I have to do before this map is finished.
Can't get it on the site without going through the main foundry, so I added it to my to-do list.
@ Tacktix
I'll look into changing the font for my next update.

instead of numbers use names. numbers suck and you have plenty of space for names.
also delete the border going through the oasis lake. water is a natural border so you don't need to put that line.

I could help you come up with names. I have many attempts at created languages, so I could totally make them all sound like the same language.

Just to bring up a few quotes from earlier in this thread, on the topic of naming territories:
lanyards wrote:I think it will work for the Oases and the sides were there is green land, but in the middle were it is dessert area, is it going to be just Dessert 1, 2, 3, 4...... all the way till around 60? That is the only way you could do it that I can think of, because it would be hard to make up that many names, and why would dessert area were nobody lives have a name. You gotta come up with a solution to the naming.

wcaclimbing wrote:TaCktiX wrote:Perhaps you could borrow from the names of the Oases. Name them things like "Oasis of [mythic-sounding name]", then name the desert area around each of them "[mythic-sounding name] Desert #".
But what about the countries between the oases?
I made it so each oasis is connected to some of the others by only one territory.
Equal distance from both, how would you decide what to name it?
I don't really like the idea of using numbers, because it leads to confusion in attacking (at least from me. I have a bad habit of attacking XX 2 when I meant to attack YY 2.... stuff like that.) Also, that would mean that each area would have to have some special division, such as thicker border lines or colored terrain. I want to leave the terrain as clean and realistic as possible.
Basically, I will use numbers if I have to, but I really want to find a better way, if there is one.
It wouldn't be too much trouble for me to make up a bunch of names. DiM did it on his maps. It isn't too difficult. I would like that way more. Numbers just aren't that fun for me to play on.
sfhbballnut wrote:I don't see a way around numbers at this point, names are gonna be so cluttered and confusing on the map it'll be unplayable, not to mention look awful, lets get some armies on the map and a couple small attempts at names, numbers, other systems etc, and see what looks good/ like it'll work then determine the best direction to head in
wcaclimbing wrote:
About naming the territories, I changed my mind. I think using numbers will be the cleanest way to go, but that still leaves us with deciding how to organize them. I could do all 1-90ish numbers, it could be split North 1, North 2, South 1, South 2, etc.
I wanted to use names, but these posts and others talked me out of it, so we decided on using numbers.
I would be ok making up names, It would just take me quite a bit longer than using numbers. The problems with names (and numbers) are in the quotes above.
Using all names instead of numbers will make the next update quite a bit slower. No "fast (even if it sucks) update w/names" for Gimil if we switch it back to names.
Final decision goes with you guys, though.
My vote is now for using numbers to name the desert. I agree with the quotes above, names would make it too cluttered and it wouldn't look as clean.

numbers add no feeling, they look bad and they cause confusion. names are much much better. if you come up with names of different sizes that fit perfectly within the terits then everything will be fine

If this is the case why is feudal more popular that realm

if you do use names, you might want to consider arranging them in alphabetical order. Nothing is more painful that finding one territory in a 'sea' of them. If they have an alphabetical order, then you know that the A territories are in the top left, the L territories are in the middle, and the R territories are in the bottom left section of the desert.
just try not to have territory names that are different only by one or two letters.

naming every desert territory sounds tedious for both the map maker and the players.
why not take a lesson from feudal?
number the desert territories by the oasis that they border?
for example:
Oasis of Life 1-13, Oasis of Strength 1-5, etc...
on a side note, i don't think the yellow sentence (be careful...) in the legend is necessary.
it's redundant. consider omitting it.
that said, i've been following this from the beginning, and you are doing a phenomenal job.
keep up the good work!
everyone is excited about this map!

Hmmm - my only criticism is that a couple of those houses look a bit like the "you have new mail" icon on my taskbar!

I think numbers might be the way to go on this one. Names seem like they would feel cluttered and interfere with the overall feeling of the map. This is an awesome looking map, and names would just get in the way. Splitting the desert into different sections (like Feudal) might be a good idea, though.

Ok, so it looks like we have two groups here, one for numbers and one for names.
This is all of the information that people have posted.
----NOTE----
This list is just OPINIONS. they are things that people have said in this thread. They might be right, they might not. I don't know. I DO NOT NECESSARILY AGREE WITH ANYTHING LISTED IN THIS POST. THESE ARE ONLY OPINIONS THAT OTHERS HAVE POSTED.NAMESPros:
More realistic.
adds more life to the map.Cons:
Would be difficult to find terrritory "XYZ" because there are so many territories and no way to tell what goes where.
Would be more cluttered.
Would take a long time to do (makes Gimil mad)
NUMBERSPros:
Easier.
Simpler.
A lot less cluttered.
Easier to find ## in the desert, because they will (kinda) be in order.
Adds to the "open and empty" feel of the desert because they leave lots of blank space.Cons:
Add no feeling to the setting
Might make some attacks more prone to mistakes (attacking territory 11 instead of 1, etc.)
They look bad.SUPPORTING QUOTES:SUPPORT NAMES:DiM wrote: numbers suck and you have plenty of space for names.

I haven't heard from Gimil yet (apart from his use of Numbers on Feudal) and there are still more people that can comment.
We need to decide!

Numb3rs! I agree that the feel of the desert should be really empty, and loads of names will null that effect. It'll look like the Desert Bazaar more than the Killer Desert of Constant Decay.

cause u have to take the oasis to win
and that would reduce it by a ton of territories

My personal prefence is numbers. Why? Because there clearer to read, make the map look tidy, if carfully placed can reduce user error.
Names have there advantages too, numbers are just my prefernce.
