I wish there was enough $$ in the budget to force our kids to go to 3rd world countries and witness what tough times are really like.

I said it before and i shall say it again. Monopolies suck. Competition in public schools should be used. Otherwise, it wont change.

If kids don't want to go to school, then fine. The world needs ditch diggers.

However, it is worth noting that several High School dropouts did go on to have successful careers. Peter Jennings and Woodrow Wilson spring to mind.

Plato said it best, "Physical exertion under compulsion does no harm to the body, but knowledge obtained under compulsion obtains no hold on the mind."

All public schooling does (and I should know because I went through the sausage mill that is the modern High School) is teach kids how to do the minimum necessary to get by. There's no added bonus for applying yourself or being creative, so nobody bothers. They just do the least amount of work necessary to pass with a decent grade.

Unless they're trying to get into college, then they overload themselves with useless AP classes and more extracurricular activities than there are books in the Bible. Then they snap under the pressure and either drop out altogether or throw themselves into their work and forget how to have a life outside of school.

Fortunately, I escaped from the Necropolis that is the public school system and finished my last semester's worth of High School at a local community college. I did it in a week. Five months worth of class. Done in one single week. At my own pace.

Real challenging stuff, that high school work. So challenging and engaging that I polished it off in the same frame of time it took some to read the last Harry Potter book.

I support things like school vouchers for the same reason I use UPS instead of the US Postal Service. Supporting the competition forces the monopoly to raise its standards and improve.

If every class had 5 or 6 hours of PE every week it might be appropriate, but I guess that's not the case.

I could read at the age of 5.

Don't be surprised, I was a TA in English 4 my senior year and I got to read some of the papers other seniors wrote. Let me tell you, Americans can't write worth shit they make tons of mistakes in their own language. The worst part of all is they are extremely lazy, if the assignment is minimum of 1000 words then the will only be 1000 words in their papers(Including name and the date). It's just sad.

I've been to several european countries as well, and I've met plenty of stupid people over there. I also have many friends in america I consider idiots... The fact is people that no matter where you go, you will have the smart and the stupid, the informed and the ignorant, and so on and so forth. The fact that all americans are lazy and stupid is absolutely ridiculous stereotype. I come from a pretty small town, where most of the people are ranchers or farmers... People (including me) literally get up at dawn most days, and work till dusk. This is a stupid thread, made by a stupid person.

Of course, there are ignorant (I wouldn't say they are stupid, just ignorant) people everywhere, but we are discussing why there are so many of them in US.

Okay little boy. WTF do you know about smarts you snotlicker? You think we got to be the most powerful and influential nation in the world by being the stupidest? You people really are blind. Of course there are the uninformed and just plain stupid in America but those would be the poor and religous among us. Some, if not most, of the great scientists, authors, musicians, artists, engineers, etc. are American. Why dont you thank the Americans for inventing the Internet you use to bash us on? Pukes.

... The U.S. needs to go metric.

... What's up with all this inches, feet, yards and miles? Pints and gallons?

... Make the switch, and in a year's time, everybody will be used to it. 2 years max, for the stupid folks.

He helped to facilitate the creation of the world wide web in the 80's. I'm talking about the internet which was created in the US by MIT scientists with DARPA. Wayyyyy before CERN.

He was the 90's, not the 80's. The internet as we know it today is solely down to his ideas and his creations.

We don't 'need' to go metric, some people use it anyway, but most people like it the way it is.
