I agree.
I like making stuff by hand much more than copy-pasting pics together. Stuff done by hand always looks better in the end. I also wouldn't mind if the star didn't have to be included.
I agree, to an extent. For example, with my image, I honestly don't think it would have helped to redraw the ninja turtle. The image is clean, with no pixellation or compression. Redrawing it would probably just be a waste of time. Granted, I really should have reworked andy, because the shadows don't exactly match (shhh...). And I agree with Dim, lone could definitely put his skills to better use.
But most of the time, it doesn't matter if you put a photo in your image or not, but how you use it.
I'd agree with pep on this.

Yes, please people the extent of photoshop's power is MUCH more than the lasso tool. Use filters, use blending modes, use the brush and smudge tools, be creative and invent something new. This is a design competition, don't be afraid to explore that, and don't think you can squeeze by with a bunch of pasted images and a lighthearted joke every round. Legally, the minimum distortion required to use someone else's image without copyright burns is 80%. Now, 80% is subjective based on the image but cutting out an image's foreground isn't even close, usually more like 25% at most. I don't want to start a Distortion Nazi policy but I would like to see more originality.

(if you really need a photo, I wouldn't mind the use of one of your OWN pictures. They even allow that in the layer battle site).

Drawing the turtle wouldn't have made the concept better but it would limit you. Limitations are an artist's best friend; they inspire creativity. It might seem a daunting task but you could draw him in your own style, whatever. It would look less like an e-card. No one draws to avoid pixellation... Though you are right, if you drew it exactly as it was it could very well be a waste of time, because the original image is a
cartoon. Explore more options; drawing a REAL turtle (and monkey) certainly wouldn't be a waste of time, and photorealism isn't a necessity.

but i don't agree here. redrawing the turtle would have been great practice and a testimony of skill.
anyway, 2 days ago i expressed my concern to mibi about the way the battle is going.
because i thought it would be a battle of skill, something serious.
and strangely not more than a week ago on another forum there was a debate about crappy sigs in sig battles.
this:

was confronted with this:

number 2 won by a lot of votes.
while i agree #2 is somewhat funny it's clear that the skill difference is enormous.

This is a mockery of graphic design and will consume the industry

Gimil, its pretty good, but I would like it more if the background was a bit better quality. the texture just isn't working for me right now. Maybe if you redrew it and added your own effect to it, it would have come out better. Overall, Its good, though.

I was under the impression that the returns were supposed to incorporate the served image. That certainly seems to be the case with many. However, it doesn't seem like the guys who followed Vace did that.

you don't have to incorporate the whole image. you must use a bit of that image or the feeling of that image. for example pepperonibread didn't include any part of snapdoodle's image but he did take the happy new year thing that lack said. that's ok.
the only image you are forced to use is the CC logo.
so far i see 1problem:
1. in bracket 2 loneprophet didn't use the CC logo

The first return incorporates the serve, then is in turn incorporated by the second return, and so on. Or is that what you meant?
As for that bracket, I assume snap was using vace's theme of a "dice factory" (a part of the image doesn't
have to be used, only its essence/theme). As for me, I took the "happy new year" off snap's image.
