How come I've never looked at an animal and thought, 'that looks tasty'? How does it help me to think that these animals are cute? I don' gerrit.

Cuteness does not imply things you want to eat.

I know, that's not what I meant. I'm wondering what makes animals hunt other animals, does a lion see a zebra and think 'mmm tasty'. I've never seen an animal I wanted to hunt and eat. When I see an animal often times I want to give it a big hug. Just wondering what's going on there.

I thin in the Lion's case, they hunt because they have to, not because they want to.

Though I agree with you. When I see a pig, I don't think "ohmigawd I want bacon". Pigs are kinda cute, in a weird, fat and ugly way.

Well... animals mostly follow their instincts. Although we don't know all that much about animal consciousness, or how aware they are in general, I don't think animals can comprehend the concept of "cuteness". For wild animals at least. For domesticated ones, it might be a bit different, but most wild animals just basically see things from the view of survival and propagating their genes.

There are exceptions though... There are tons of cases where an animal of one species finds and abandoned baby animal of another species and adopts it. A crow has been known to adopt a baby cat. A mother lion has been known to adopt an orphan gazelle - after slaughtering its mother.

because humans like us rarely have direct interaction with the animals they eat?

other animals salivate when they see their live prey, because that's what they've eaten their whole lives. we salivate when we see a cheeseburger, because that's what we eat our whole lives. i'm sure that humans who regularly kill and eat wild animals salivate when they see an animal to kill and eat.

A bit of a side note to that, but maybe you'll find it interesting, is that cuteness seems to be genetically related to domesticity, at least in mammals-

I find that kinda odd. I can find wild animals just as cute as domesticated ones.
