Yes - but the way the board is - the ones that are 1 advanced - can't actually move 2 anyway!!
Clever planning too - also the pawns can't attack anyone...

Couldn't F2 attack F4? The legend makes me think that.

I am fairly sure meaning pawns can't make any actual chess attacks. (diagonally)

Yeah, I tried to place the pawns so they wouldn't confuse anybody. No diagonal attacks, and no moving forward 2 if they aren't on the home row. They can only attack 1 in front of them, or 2 if both are empty (so H6P can't attack H4).
I hope the movement diagrams and objective aren't that confusing...

Draft 11. Why? Because I can.

I did the large version in a hurry last time, so I cleaned it up a bit.
Changes:
- Scaled down textures in large
- Cleaned up white pieces
- Changed signature glow
- Cleaned up instruction boards
- Gave Black Knight an evil glowing red eye

unfortunatly...you do not have a black knight on the board...so it has no purpose other than to attract attention

i like the 2-d pieces a lot, for their clarity. their outline can merge into some of the black squares. would u be prepared to change the black squares to a dark brown wood colour?

A chess board?!?!

Looks like good instructions, yes, they're going to be very helpful for those that don't know the game.

Would it be possible to remove Black's white-squared Bishsop add a black knight somewhere?

Yup.

Well it would have to be a fairly light brown, otherwise I would have to keep the glow. I tried to keep the contrast in this map to black/white only, there is very little black/brown or white/brown interaction. Making the black squares brown is a possibility, but I feel it would decrease visibility and detract from the black/white contrast throughout the map. If there's more support for this idea then I might try it out.

You, sir have quite nearly redeemed yourself with such a picture.
Fire Mario wrote:Would it be possible to remove Black's white-squared Bishsop add a black knight somewhere?
If I did that then I would have to rework the whole board, since the black bishop is a primary offensive piece and one of the keys to reaching the white king. Right now the board is fairly balanced (as far as I know... hopefully I won't pull a "Das Schloss").

Nice! I think kings should start neutral.
Be back later with more comments

The kings do start neutral.
Anyway, mibi offered to do a free touch-up of this map. Here's the old version:

and here's the new version:

Love the new texture...
Not sure about Red being a base colour though.

should be ok... it's like switching the marble board for a wooden one with a cherry or mahogany finish

Something I just noticed now is how extremely off-center the pieces are. Whenever I see it I get this involuntary urge to reach into the screen and say "adjust."
Would it be possible to center all of the pieces and then put the army circle superimposed over the base of the piece?
On the voting note, I agree with yeti. If the red was a tad less powerful I think I'd like it a lot more....

I don't know if you will like it or not, but you are free to use this for your board.

Oh, I just noticed that the board will need to be rotated a quarter turn to make it correct.

or you could play from side to side and it would be correct.

Knock on "wood" lol.

I like the new one, but I preferred the way you had a bit of separation between the board and the outer frame … I'm not quite sure how to do it, but a way to make the marble sloped would be nice? Maybe adding a low-opacity layer around the frame, then making a radial gradient overlay on it? Just throwing things out there…
Okay … I took 5 minutes with the burn tool, and obviously it's a very quick job, but I think it conveys the point, or at least what you can do with it. If I had something layered, like you do, it could be great! (i.e. putting numbered layers over it, etc.)

I prefer the new board (not pork's), but wonder if the redness could be turned down a bit?

I agree on both accounts. Less red, and centered pieces would be great! Mibi's adjustments to your signature and title are very good.

Looks like the general sentiment is towards mahogany. I'll change the color scheme and a few other things next update. There won't be too much red, I promise.

i just have one more bone to pick sofar with the latest draft...the pieces are not centered in the squares which offsets and draws your eyes away the more you look at it..in fact it probably wouldn't look to bad if you had the army numbers layered on top of the pieces

Also if the dark squares will be textured as in the latest draft then the white ones should be too. Pick a very light grain of wood running perpendicular to the dark squares and it will look fantastic!
