not to mention comical music...

(especially the 70's and 80's)
personally... I think the 90's threw some new stuff in there that warrants mention. Difficult to compare much in the 80's to nirvana, or pearl Jam... even the most ambitious 80's band never really hit that level of creativity and originality.
one band that did hit that level even if not from the 80's...
Led Zeppelin

Zeppelins are great! Wish we would stop having a Depression/Recession every time they start to get off the ground again (No pun intended.). The band.... Not so much.

50-90's rock for the most was good.
When I say rock I mean predominately blues/hard rock ( zeppelin, aerosmith and such), the harder late 80's rock, such as GnR, and 90's grunge like pearl. Prog rock bands like Rush and Yes were also good. I don't know what i would call bands like the Police and Journey and U2.....

Heh... much like Emerson, Lake & Palmer or The Moody Blues... Yes was definitely a great change of pace. In the era of Led Zep... King Crimson is one of the best groups I ever had the priviledge to see perform live. Like so many of the guitarists fueling some innovative new music, Robert Fripp is another unique talent. Court of the Crimson King was released about the same time as Zep's first LP.

i don't know, physical graffiti is a lot of their classic, and
great songs, but i think that 3 is a little more creative, with bron y aur stomp, gallow's poll, tangerine, and celebration day

I was listening to a live version of Whole Lotta Love, and i noticed that in the middle, they do a Wanda Jackson cover.
