Norse is a one of the major reasons I come to CC every day. Even if I don't agree with his bigoted opinions. I very much support his right to express those same opinions.

I realize that this website has no guaranteed free speech rules, but temp-banning is much more effective than perma-bans at controlling this type of behavior.

Commute him to a temp-ban at least for breaking the rules. By cutting him out completely he will eventually stop coming to CC and it would be a loss to the entire community, not just the chaps.

Man, lot of poeple want him back. I never knew he was that liked.

Really? Because Norse didn't think so. Do you realize how many temp bans he previously had? Did that alter his behavior in the slightest? Nope. He knew where the line was, he chose to cross it... repeatedly. End of story.

temp-banning is not more effective than perma-bans. With perma-bans you don't have to deal with the fool again. Norse got what he desevered.

He's just a bit eccentric, he's a voice without limits really, there are plenty of people here whose opinions are limited by the rules (some people join and get forumbanned instantly because they express them, others dont and are allowed to stay), so by that rule if norse can promise not to be such an idiot in that he thinks that blacks are inferior in cranial capacity, he will be welcomed by me in open arms.

Let me explain here. Norse obviously had a very clear picture of where the line was, and he continually crossed it, and got banned again and again for his posts.

I have a very clear picture of where the line is and I choose not to cross it (on purpose) because I don't want a temp ban.

Without Norse, I don't know how far is too far. Everyone else who likes to push the envelope is in the same boat.

Sure, you have to ban him repeatedly, but it was so regular that it was never a big deal for anyone.

Norse was like an early warning system for the rest of us who have low moral scruples and don't get offended by simple words.

I might actually join the movement, sure, Norse was a right-wing bastard with his ideas on race stuck in the early 19th century, but somehow he managed to be likable. Sure, I hated his guts after 2 days but even I came to like him. The two posts linked to earlier where he responded in those discussions were nothing, if you get banned for that you might as well ban Napoelon for not being able to construct anything even remotely resembling an argument, the atheists for offending the christians and the christians for offending the atheists. Then see what you're left with.

And if a gamechat is going to be used as evidence, then don't delete it. Really how stupid can a person be...

You see HS, the CC guidelines say that joking and poking fun at people is OK, so long as you're winding up people who hold political views opposite to those of the moderating staff. It doesn't? Well what a suprise... perhaps that's because it's a primitive, arbitrary, and completely ridiculous system.

The truth is that his 'line breaches' were all fairly minor, and most of the alleged 'breaches' weren't deserving of sanctions.

The true problem here is that Norse's pollitical views were at odds with the moderating staff of this site. When I'm feeling argumentative I give Right-Wingers easily as hard a time as Norse used to give Left-Wingers (with the same jibing and harassing) but it's regarded as ok to bash that sub-set of ideologies because they're not the commonly held beliefs of the CC moderating staff.

The truth is that if Norse had behaved in the same way, but argued from a liberal perspective, then he wouldn't have been banned half as much, and consequentially would still be here today.

Furthermore, I fail to see why perma-banning is necessary in this instance. Sure, temporary banning didn't change Norse's behaviour, but is it really necessary to remove him from this community in order to allow it to operate? Could Norse not simply have been ejected for a long while for each infraction? He was not like Xtratabasco who deliberately attempted to interfere with the day to day functioning of the forum, he was simply a poster who occasionally stepped over a (somewhat arbitrarily defined) line.

Does perma-banning Norse really serve this community's best interests? Is his absence required to allow this place to run smoothly? Or is this in fact a sanction that is disproportionate to what Norse actually did here, and the result of a lazy and unecessary moderating staff decision?
