i have 4 partitions. if i make a swap file of 4 GB on each will that count as a large 16gb swap file?

and another question. does this have to do with the photoshop swap? because the photoshop creates it's own file he doesn't use the swap file

OK try this. Cut the image into 4 pieces. That way you will only be working on a quarter of the file at one time. I know it might be a pain but I don't have any other suggestions.

I made a 18000x9000 pixel file on my computer. It was of 366 pictures of my daughter (1 for each day the first year) and I had to do it in 4 parts.
I had the image map, 370ish text layers and 366 picture layers. The final image was a jpeg of 250 mb but each psd was over 2 gigs. I had 5 of them.

I know yours might not be the same but that is all I can suggest. Other than that, MORE RAM, MORE RAM!

Yeah 16GB of Swap space should help...

I'm not familiar with CS3 - perhaps there's a setting in the app somewhere?

Also - have you checked to ensure there are no updates to fix it?

yeah that could work if i had some kind of image that could be split perfectly. unfortunately i'm working on a big painting that can't be cut into 4 pieces because i have things going back and forth and i draw them by hand. splitting in 4 means i'd have to deal with aligning the lines perfectly and i can't do that since we're talking about freehand drawing.

btw nice idea with the images of your daughter.
i'm making a painting for my wife now :)

yes i have the scratch disk set and that scratch disk file is the problem. it gets to 12-13 gigs and the comp freezes and photoshop crashes.
that's why i'm saying the windows page file has nothing to do with this.
it's the photoshop swap file that gets huge.

Depends on what the photoshop swap file is being used for...

Depends on how much of it is held in memory etc...

I got the idea from my dad. he had always wanted to do this for us as children. Well I took a picture each day for 1 year. 366 pictures (from 0 days old to 365)

Here it is. The original is 5 feet wide and 2.5 feet tall (18,000 x 9,000 px @ 300 dpi). I got it printed on photo paper from http://www.pephoto.com for $30 US.

Sorry to spam here.

Well there was one night at 11:52 pm that I woke up and said to Heather. "I FORGOT TO TAKE A PICTURE". SO I ran into teh room and Riley was sleeping. I quickly got teh shot and ran out. Almost messed up the whole thing.

You can see the picture. it is in the middle, 3 up from the large one of her sleeping at the bottom(right above the name Riley). She is rubbing her eyes from the flash and has the pacifier in her mouth.

LOL

Well here is the problem. First off if you want to have a nice rectangular shape, 366 pictures does not divide equally in to that area. That is why you see 4 different sized pictures. A friend and I did some huge 4 variable equations based on area and picture size. I eventually got to this layout. But with 2008 we have leap year which adds another day. But since my new kid is born after that I don't have to worry.

RJ, if you do 2008 and want to have this type of look you this layout will not work. But I can see if I can find the excel file and work out some of the numbers with you if you want. But you do have over a year.

I found the best way to take the picture was after work right when I got home.

Yep just first year. You would not believe how weird it was not taking a picture the day after her birthday. I felt relieved and at the same time sad that I was not continuing. Oh well. I figured I would have to do the same thing for each new kid so I did not want to go too far.

Don't now why people on here don't like being cooks, remember under siege: A former SEAL, now cook, is the only person who can stop a gang of terrorists when they sieze control of a US Navy battleship.

So increasing your Heap didn't work?

Where is the Photoshop temp file being written too? an NTFS disk - or a FAT disk?

ntfs disk. otherwise it wouldn't be able to increase to 13 gigs and crash.

if it were a fat disk i think it would either give me an error or simply create a second swap temp file.

I suspected that - but was just checking...

Try moving the swap to fat and see if it will create more than one temp file?

Try this...

http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewCon ... &sliceId=1

Especially number 5...

PS I know it's MAC - but the same might apply - it's worth a shot.
