tournament invitation system

Postby Mr_Adams on Wed Dec 12, 2007 5:45 pm

I suggest a system that allows tournament directors to send out a tournament announcment to everyone who qualifies for said tournament. each person could have the option of recieving them or not, and the program could send a noticte to everyone who qualifeies and has the recieve invitations setting on.

This could be set up similar to the start a game system. options could be things like freemium required? yes/no

Minimum points? No Min/ 500/ 600/ ect. ect. going by 100

Maximum points? No Max/ 500/ 600/ ect. ect. going by 100

previous tournaments won? not required/ 1/ 2/ 3/ ect.

similar things... this would allow tournaments to fill more quickly... of corse this would only be used by tournament directors, and only once per tournament (at the very beging of set up)

You could also turn off the setting, so that you won't recieve the messages.

I don't think Lack is going to go for a system that sends out 1,000s of PMs at a time. If you want to recruit, you are going to have to do the work yourself.

I don't shoot down everyone's ideas. I just give my opinions on the ones that directly affect my job, that's all. Sometimes I like ideas, sometimes I don't. Mostly it has to do with the fact that I sometimes wonder how dedicated some of the tournament organizers are. After all, I deal with abandoned tournaments on a regular basis. Before I want Lack dedicating his time to a mass mailing system, I would rather see him work to implement other ideas that would help my realm progress far faster.

your idea led to my own idea

when you make a tournement game, the only thing that makes it a tourny game is the fact you put something inside the name box (ive had tourny powers before lol) what if you made 5 more boxes to enter player names and it would send a pm to those players and all they have to do is click a link and they are in the game. you still enter in a password for the game but the link bypasses that and if you need a reserve you can just have them enter the game like they do now with the password

So entering their names into a box at the bottom of the Create a Game page sends them an automated PM with a link to join the game directly - bypassing the password?

However, phpBB3, will basically do that for you.

For example: You would simply take the 60 seconds necessary to type out a quick message stating something such as:

==========

Hello! It is time for The Allspark League to start, and here are you game numbers and passwords. Please join the games as soon as possible.

Games: 123456, 123456, 123456
Password: password

==========

Then, because after the forum upgrade you can send the same PM to multiple players at once, you simply type in all their names and hit send. If you are smart and copy the message before sending, you simply paste, change the number, and repeat.

Simple as pie, improves the current system by a VAST degree, and doesn't take any work on Lack's part. It comes as a function of phpBB3.

SOMEBODY realizes this FINALY!!! And everyone else's comments are missing the point. I want to be able to advertise tournaments to people who don't use the forums. For example, I didn't know CC HAD tournaments until I started using the forums (the same week I started "the best of the worst tourname" and is now continued in "the best of the worst: round 2")

i doubt it would too hard, after all he was able to make the box to actually make the tourny game, (which is called by some "tourny powers") i think he could do it in the same mindset, making it part of the tourny powers

OR

he could make an invitation system for any game (say you wanna play with friends) and then just run the tourny invitation off that

my suggestion only send pms to specific players, saves a lot of time for tournement directors, and doesnt send people unwanted pms whereas adam's idea would likely really peeve some some people (like me lol)

basically all you would see is 6 boxes where you can enter a players screen name and it would automatically send a pm to just those players with a link to instantly join the game (bypass the password since only those 6 people would get the pm, why bother lol? there still is a password though that the creator makes to allow for reserves and replacements) and it would say something like
_________________________
Hi (player name),

You have been invited to participate in (if there is a tournement name it goes here) Game: [link](game number)[/link]

Would you like to decline? [link]Yes[/link]
_________________________

the last part is a link that would send the creator a notice saying that (player) declined so they can know right away that they need to find another player and just give that player the pass and game number

Did you not read my entire suggestion before posting? Part of the idea was to be able to change this in your personal settings, by switching on/ off. In other words, you wouldn't recieve messages unless you had told the program to recieve the mass maessages. (this could be done with something similar to the ignore list, you choose to NOT recieve messages from certain people, you choose NOT to recieve messages that use mass pm'ing)

i want to submit my suggestion officially but im not in control of this thread and i want to use the form so i will not start a new thread, just post the form here unless a mod wants otherwhise

Subject: Invitation System mainly for tournement uses but can be applied to casual games with passwords (which means it would then be a premie only feature)

Concise Idea, specifics and reasons why:
Herakilla wrote:your idea led to my own idea

Importance (differs from different people, tourny runners might want now but others would rather see something else on the list first) 1 or 5 lol (cowards way out!)

Sorry I'm late to the party here, I have just found this thread.

There needs to be some way to balance the ability to recruit and spamming the community as a whole. The theory of putting in the ability to send out a mass PM to everyone who opts in is OK in theory but in practice what happens is that there will be a number of players who qualify for a lot of tournaments who will get virtually every PM out there. It will be nice the first and second time. By the tenth time they just get deleted without even getting read and its just annoying spam.

On the other hand, Mr Adams makes a valid point that many players don't know how to join a tournament. How many players try to join a tourney game but just don't know the password. I've learned the hard way that simple passwords are going to have games that get the wrong players in them.

I think though, that part of the repsonibility lies with the tournament organizers. Most tournament organization is somewhat passive. Its post a thread with a tourney idea and wait for people to sign up. To bring more people into requires a more active approach.

then support my idea, it specifically sends an invite to specific players, not every1 on the site
