While I agree with what the video is saying, I don't think its doing to convince anyone. Comparing someone's god to a jug of milk is flat out insulting to those of religious denominations, and for that reason, it's not very effective. For me, its telling me something I already view as fact, so I don't need convincing. Plus the video is obvious, I'm sure people of religion have been confronted with the same questions before, but that has not changed them...why? Because their religion tells them to have faith in god no matter what. Of course even the most strong heartedly religious people have doubted god, but at the same time, it is the doubt the strengthens faith. Personally I just don't think the video is going to change anyone. Plus there have been a few topics on this before.

Pompous is what happens when you know you're right. It seems that we atheists are just as entitled to it as Christians and everyone else. Except we really are right.

Yea...but I feel they are entitled to their beliefs just as I am entitled to mine, no matter the degree to which I disagree with them. It's when religion gets integrated into politics when I get a bit pissed off. I don't exactly understand the idea of Christian conservatism. The same party that calls themselves the moral majority is facing torture cover ups, not to to mention they support capital punishment, something the church is strongly against. When I was religious, what I took out of it was the idea that you should help others less fortunate than yourself - and if that's the case, liberalism seems more of a viable option with a higher minimum wage, welfare, social security, and universal health care - but whatever. At the very least, if religion should have any impact on politics, it should be in the middle ground, but conservatives have done too good of a job at convincing others that their part is the morally correct one. Sorry to go off topic a bit in that rant.

I certainly liked how he kept telling me that I was smart and I'd see that he was right Unfortunately that's just a propaganda technique much the same as a car salesman telling you "Oh that car goes way too fast! Maybe you'd like to look at this one". As logical as it may sound, saying "you're smart you can see this" is propaganda. It is implying that if you don't agree you are stupid.

The milk jug thing was pretty funny. It assumes that I agree with the Christianity.com idea about prayer. I don't. Some Christians do have the idea that God will make everything okay for them if they pray. I figure God expects me to do everything within my power to help those around me. That includes praying for them, working with them, helping them, visiting them, and any number of other things I might do to be of service. A big flaw with the milk jug thing is that I doubt seriously if anyone has actually worshipped that milk jug for anyone to see if it answered about the same amount of prayers as God. Until we see that study (with actual believers now) it remains an argument that is based on an assumption.

He mentioned studies that supposedly showed that prayer was useless. Did you notice they all involved "distant healing". Yes I'll agree (my preist does too) that sitting down over a list of strangers names isn't the best way to pray. There is little connection there. Not to mention in those studies do you think the patients' family members where really frobidden from praying for their sick relatives? If not then what was the dependent variable?

He then goes on to make some debatable statements as if they were facts. Ostensibly to prove that prayer doesn't do any good. THere are many, many studies to show that prayer and faith has health benefits.
Here is one, but there are many others. He is saying that my prayer for the guy across town won't do anything. OK maybe not, but many studies state that my prayer and faith can help me and those nearest me.

Now, I won't tell you that answered prayers and a trend of benefits from prayer are evidence that God exists. I'll only say that leading a religious life has mental, physical, and emotional benefits. The guy in the video though is trying to state (with some serious logical holes) the opposite.

I do not beleive in God, but prayers surely help someone. aAving a positive attitude ALWAYS help, no matter what. Which the guy in the video got wrong.

Of course, it won't heal a cancer by itself. But beeing depressive is surely not going to help.

Yea, the jug of milk example was ridiculous. I can see how prayer can help someone by giving them something to believe in (whether or not I agree with it). If the brain believes that it is going to get better, and if one believes that they have someone helping them on their side, they are more confident and without a doubt more likely to live a healthier life, as well as be more likely to recover from an illness. As long as one is careful not to become pessimistic and cynical as a result of prayer, it holds true that prayer can certainly have an impact on health. Whether this is the power of god or not is a different story. The brain has a stronger influence in the body's ability to recover than one may think regardless.
