I'm working on a Happy Days episode, English to Dutch, and they're talking about 'hiking a ball', presumably in a football context.

Could anybody tell me what that is? Doesn't have to be a Dutch translation. A description in English would be great too.

Thanks!

its in football (american version), a bunch of guys are in a line squatting on their knees except for quarterback and the one in the middle yells random numbers out that correspond to a specific play. then he throws the ball backwards between his legs to the quarterback.
here is my pathetic illustration (x = player) (0 = football)(t = throwing person)

Thank you! Does that mean the throwing person is doing the hiking? So the hiking is throwing the ball between your legs to the quarterback?

for what its worth....

the actual act of hiking is when the guy who bends over and grabs the football, brings the football between his legs to the person standing behind him. It starts every play in football. You could probably watch better clips of it if you really needed to see the idea in praxis.

Thanks. I know just about enough of American football to know what you're talking about, but I just wanted to make sure I got it right.

Of course there is no real Dutch equivalent, hehe. I think I'll go with 'aangeven'.

Thank you both!

actually....If Im not mistaken......doesn't British Rugby have the same way of starting a play? Seems to me they "hike" the ball from the start of a "scrum"
but, just in case you didnt get the whole picture, the "centre" position, is the player who hikes the ball. He, and all the blockers line up along the "scrimage" line (starting position for that play) and he puts his hands on the ball as it sits on the line. The "quarterback" then calls signals (codes) and on the correct signal, the centre hikes the ball between his legs, to the quarterbacks hands, which are also between the centres legs.
Hope this helps.
I submit my "two cents' worth because I have had some great times in your country, on more than one occasion.........anything to help!

What does aangeven mean?

You have the awesomest job, btw. Do you work for a translation company or a media firm or what? Anytime I watch a tv show or movie in a language I know with subtitles in a different language I know, I always think I could do a better job at the translation. How do I find such employment?
