Need Some Help

Postby muy_thaiguy on Sun Nov 25, 2007 9:50 pm

I found a medal sort of thing while going through my late grandfather's stuff (he was a pack-rat up until his death at 90). First up, there is a phrase on it, and I believe it is Latin,
Ad Altare Dei.

It is on a cross medal. I believe it is a Catholic one, but I am unable to find anything on it yet.
"Eh, whatever."

When I say the words fast like a person of that language would it sounds like something I have heard before. I can't place where I've heard it but if I remember, I'll let you know.

ad = Towards [a place]
altare = altar
Dei = God (gen. sing.)

from PSALM 43
Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause
against an ungodly people;
from those who are deceitful and unjust
deliver me!
2For you are the God in whom I take refuge;
why have you cast me off?
Why must I walk about mournfully
because of the oppression of the enemy?

3O send out your light and your truth;
let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy hill
and to your dwelling.
4Then I will go to the altar of God,
to God my exceeding joy;
and I will praise you with the harp,
O God, my God.

5Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my help and my God.

I don't think it is a boy scout thing. I can't swear by it, but that's my opinion. It just seems to have too much meaning to be something that you pass out for a bunch of youth survivalists.

Let me ask you something. Did your grandfather live in Europe and by your knowledge did he have a seat in parliment?

No, but he had been to Ireland to visit family there a few times. Also, he was born in Nebraska, and his grandparents were immigrants from Ireland. (My family has been in the US 6 generations on that side of it, and 4 are still alive.)

Unless you find out for sure that it is a boy scout item, then I would suggest researching your ancestors of Ireland inorder to find something to do with the "Statues of the Realm" act passed by parliment in the late 1600's. I don't blame you if you ignore this whole idea, but if you havn't read this paticular document, I suggest you should and you will more clearly know what I'm getting at. At least read the act and decide for yourself then if it's worth persueing.
