Not all settlers were like that.
The problem is the same as what is going on now.
The ones in power are even more power-hungry, so the entirety of the race, group, or nationality are blamed for it.
Not all settlers wanted to screw them over, but they were sheep and followed their leaders. You probably would too if it was your parents or relatives telling you to listen to them.
Now, my family wasn't here, then... And my ancestors that were lived in New mexico and Mexico, so they didn't really care... at least not then.

Exactly, nobody steppd up. It doesn't matter if they weren't power-hungry, they didn' try to stop injustice, so they are still responsible. Just cuz you didn't do the deed doesn't mean your innocent.

Halloween is a harvest holiday: our culture forces adults to buy candy so kids can eat it.

Halloween means more than that... Well, Samhain does.
New Years makes sense... Even though the TIMING of New years doesn't...
Christmas makes sense, though the true holiday is not followed.
Valentines Day... NO SENSE
St Patty's Day... NO SENSE!
