Trust in your government

Postby luns101 on Sat Nov 17, 2007 9:28 pm

I've noticed that some people here believe the U.S. government, most police departments, and corporations are almost never to be trusted. I'm wondering where this mistrust comes from. I think it's a healthy thing to be a little skeptical of any government to a certain point. So tell us...if you don't trust government, then why? If you do trust your government then why? When did these feelings either in support or disgust of your government take root for you? When you look back on your life, which influences shaped your current beliefs about the government (family, peers, media, etc.)

I would like to share these results with a political science class I help my friend with on Thursday nights.

I'm somewhere between "They are occasionally wrong" and "In general, they are not to be trusted".

In my studies, I'm a Latin America specialist, which gives me a pretty bad outlook on the U.S. government to begin with, at least concerning foreign policy. I used to be pretty radical, and would have thought that any government is not to be trusted.

Today I work for the government. I suppose I'm more or less the average bureaucrat. I have practically no power, good intentions, and huge incentives to not do any work at all.

I believe in the very basic structure of the system, but think that it is wrought with anachronisms, corruption, and an underlying imperialist philosophy.

Yep... I used to give the government fellatio until I learned more about Extraordinary Rendition, Agent Orange, Iraq, 9/11, Tom Delay, etc.

There's quite a thick line between thinking the government didn't blow up our own buildings and supporting every single thing the government does. By saying stuff like this, you're acting as badly as every flag-waving, ultraconservative "patriot" who called everyone who didn't support the Iraq War when it first began "Un-American." The world is not the black and white you see it as. It's varying shades of gray, which is how a feel about our government. There are some people worth leading it, and other who are selfishly corrupting it.

That said, I'm more inclined to distrust people in the government, because there is much more to lose through believing in the corrupt than being skeptical of the just.

What is the level of trust that you have in the U.S. government...since you're an American.

xtratabasco wrote:there are dozens of goose stepping government grovelers here. why do you think their butts are always up in the air, cuzz there licking boots.

Well, they can answer for themselves and you can answer for yourself. I notice you are accusing them of the motivations for their beliefs. Try focusing on why you have such a high level of mistrust in your own life. Perhaps you don't like self examination but give it a try instead of pointing the finger.

For me, I have a general level of trust in the government because of the structure of checks and balances we have.

I've been to a few countries outside of the U.S., Xtra...believe me, while the U.S. has problems it's not even close to some of the others I've visited.

OK, but what I'm trying to get at here is why some people tend to focus on news stories like the ones you provide links to and why others say it's ridiculous. You can't give an explanation for other people because you don't know their past and their motivations for dismissing them. However, you can give a reason for why you focus on them personally.

Let's take the 9/11 posts that you instigate on a regular basis. Why would you believe people that claim there's additional, secret information that's being withheld by the government, but then reject explanations given by the government?

There has to be something in your background that has helped shape why you believe one source of information about our government but reject other sources.

I guess for me, serving in the military and then later teaching at a minimum security jail has had some effect on how I view the government & law enforcement. I generally trust both institutions. I see that you are generally cynical of them through the videos that you post. Do you think that that is a balanced view and why?

I'm not asking you to prove your theories. We're all biased to a certain extent on how we view the news and information put out by the government.

My country is led by a bunch of incompotent buffoons who can argue endlessly about which colour to paint the room while completely ignoring important issues.
At least it's still better than the USA government.

I voted, "In general, they are not to be trusted". How can it be trusted? Maybe it's just me but I hate being lied to. I grew up an Army brat, I now work in a prison. (btw the latter has reinforced by disdain for law enforcement) Growing up, I was a patriotic fool. Then, I grew up. Started evaluating things for myself, instead of just accepting what was being fed to me. Most people will choose to stay in denial, and that's understandable...it's more comfortable. I, myself, went in and out of denial..... I didn't want to believe "my" government could do these things. THINK about the reasons the 19 hijackers "did what they did". Because "they hate freedom"? You have to be kidding me! You don't go mess with the biggest bully on the block because he has a PS3 and you don't!

I digress, as I believe this is falling on deaf ears.
