MR. Nate wrote:One of questions that I can't answer philosophically, but have some understanding Theologically. Options:
I. Souls are eternally existent, both into the past and the future.
II. Souls are at some point in time created.
. . A. God created souls some time in the distant past, and they are semi-conscious/ asleep until placed into bodies.
. . B. God creates the soul
. . . . 1. At the time of conception
. . . . 2. Shortly after conception
Personally, I adhere to II, B, 2, but I'm not positive about that.
In any case, prior to its creation, a soul would not exist, while most people who believe in souls believe they survive death, so pre-birth does not equal death. (unless you believe in reincarnation)

EvilPurpleMonkey wrote:You simply did not exist. you were nothing. You were the lack of everything. Then your parents had sex, sperm traveled into the uterus, combined with an egg, the cells then split apart and grew into a larger entity through a process I believe is mitosis. Then you could take 2 approaches. Either you began to exist when you first became conscious, or when the egg and sperm combined. You proceeded to grow in your mothers womb, or a test tube, and grew up into the idiot you are today.

Just because you're capable of identifying suffering, feeling content, choosing things you like/dislike and bitching about it in terms we understand does not mean you have an 'immortal ghost' that lives inside you.
So I submit to you that this is an inherently flawed conundrum, to which there can possibly be no answer that would satisfy the question. It's all a matter of perspective.
Also, you're trying to mix science and religion here, thus muddying the waters to a point that no possible conclusion can be drawn.

Before the factory made the light-switch...it was set to neither.

Yeah, I guess if you don't believe in a soul, that would change some things . . . .

Science and Religion. Why just have one, when you can have them both?
If you have two sides to a story, you put them together to get the truth.

Because science and religion disagree with each other...

Not necessarily. See my "Christiovolution" theory.
Minister Masket wrote:I would like to take this time to introduce my concept of "Christiovolution" - the combination of Christianity and Evolution.
Just like Judaism combined with Jesus to become Christianity, and Cathlicism combined with Martin-Luthur to become Protestantism.
Who's to say God did not set the Big Bang in motion? And evolution?
I believe in God, not the Bible. Too many people look to the Bible instead of God nowadays. Unfortuantly, the book has been changed and corrupted beyond regognition in history. For example: King James changed it so that most parts said good things about him! Lousy git.
Remember: Christiovolution!

Dude that isn't a new concept. Theistic evolution is a widely accepted view by many people.

But, you haven't given us evidence that Christiovolution is the way.
(Actually I know one or two christians who do actually believe that evolution was set in motion by god.)
