Do you agree with this statement? Please explain: "Technology is making the world smaller"

No. Still as much ground to cover as there was previously, no matter how long it takes to traverse the ground it is still there. Same reason a glacier has more heat than a cup of hot coffee.

True, but obviously it is meant figuratively, not literally.

Because of the internet, I can talk to you guys... When I was 17, AOL had just come out and it was barely affordable. Not to mention the best you could get was a 14.4 modem... AHHHHH!

I know he meant figuratively - just saying that while it is faster to get from point A to point B, the world is filled by more to see, if anything it has gotten bigger.

But now you can see all of those things from the comfort of your own home... You don't have to leave to travel anywhere in the world.

Also, people have naturally become more intelligent on the whole than what our parents were able to achieve.

Not to mention, I agree with the fact that the NATURAL world has become much smaller as we slowly destroy it making way for more human parasites to take its place... heh

Well, I meant it literally and figuratively. In theory, your life could become a lot smaller if you use technology in mass asmounts. You dont need to get a newspaper, you dont need to go out to get food, you can work from your computer, you can text/e-mail others.

yes...i believe it is true...

even if you look at this purely from the point of view of a virus, the world is smaller today then it was 100 years ago. With airplane travel zooming us around the world faster then ever before. This in turn allows a virus to spread from country to country faster. Once inside a country, due to the vast overcrowding, and amount of public transportation, the virus can quickly cement itself into a city, and spread indiscriminately.

As a side note, with our present laws, it would make it harder for us to quarantine a place, because it would be a violation of rights, which means that the we lose one more weapon against a virus...

but that is simply one point, of many that prove the world is getting smaller.

Well nukes are technology...but they kill humans and animals, not the earth. We have no technology which can destroy all life, never mind the whole earth.

I think technology is a good thing. It improves people lives and mass media and other stuff makes sure that of bad things happen then at least peopel knwo about it and the international community have a cahnce to at least try to sort it out (ie Boxing Day Tsunami, Darfur, Burma, Global Warming etc...).

There have been many losers from technology, like the 3rd world who are almost like slaves to the first world, the environment and other stuff, but I think as the technology improves to go into the next "age" these wrong will be, or attempted to be righted.

3rd world almost like slaves to the first world?? Buddy, they ARE slaves to the first world.

Also, technology will not improve anything as we move into the next 'age' - In the short term, the middle to upper white class will benefit for a while to come,(otherwise known as 'rich') but once the worlds finite resources run dry (and it will happen, because the world is finite) you watch technology come crashing down.

No? Why don't you go check out your local river. Or Ocean, or forest. We don't have the capacity to destroy all life? Well we're doing a damn fine job of it at the moment

Technology and Civilization is a drug that the entire first world is addicted to (me included, I'm just aware of the addiction) - it will ultimately destroy everything.

If things ever get bad enough then all humans will die off (the worst of worst case scenarios, but you know). The world will still be here, and it might take a while, but it will heal. Of course when you consider how long it took to go from basic life to modern life (heck, even from monkeys to humans), it will be a snap of the fingers. The earth is ancient, and has gone through a lot. We might need it's natural resources but it could care less.

They are not slaves because they still have the choice to work or not to work, and the government of the country can refuse the western companies and the factories is they want. It may not be a great choice - 1p an hour or no work, but its a choice at the end of the day and that removes that means they are not slaves.

The middle and upper classes arnt the "rich". The middle class is in the middle, the upper class is "rich". Also, in western countries the gap is closing. With technology becoming cheaper the poorer families can now afford it. They can but LCD TV's, iPods, brand trainers, mobile phones, small cars etc...

We dont have the capacity to destroy all life, no. We have the capacity to damage it horrendously and cause mass-damage, but to completely wipe life out, no we dont have that power or capacity.
