Republic of China or Taiwan and why?

Postby ignotus on Mon Oct 22, 2007 5:41 am

For the past day or so i was posting a trick question Republic of China or Taiwan and why? in all this "get to know" topics (Skittles, soundout9, The Weird One, Misterman10...)
It ended as a great disappointment to me. Why? Because it seems that it proves that you don't know geography and/or history that well.
:? :? :?

Republic of China is really the official name of (pro western) Taiwan. You shouldn't mix it up with the communist People's Republic of China.

The first one to buy me a new computer and redecorate my bathroom, I will recognise as being the genuine Republic of China.

Isn't it possible that when you put up both ROC & Taiwan they just assumed you were the idiot who was making the mistake?

it's not really a question of geography/history, it's simply that the phraes "republic of china" is very similar to "people's republic of china"

Yes, it is. So read the fine print. This was a really tricky question, but I figured that someone will remember that almost all marxist-leninist states used People's republic in their names.

And I really think that it's a question of geography and/or history because if you open almost any Atlas or History book for Asian continent I think it states that fact there (in Croatia it does). :roll:

I have actually known this fact for sometime now. It was also a fairly big issue before 9/11 happened. And personally, I think Taiwan is it's own seperate country, whether PRC likes it or not.

.... for now, anyway.

... the fact that this is not common knowledge (the distinctions and geography) is a sad testament to what folks call "education".

I know, I wouldn't mind visiting there and a couple other places over in Asia.

Really that is silly. I know where taiwan is and I can point it out on the map. The only problem is that it is called Republic of China by themselves and in official stuff. Sure it's confusing, but I find it pretty decent that I can actually point to where taiwan is, as opposed to many other countries that I haven't the faintest clue about...

Currently, the People's Republic of China (PRC) is the only Marxist-Leninist state in the world that uses the title People's Republic. Media and scholars may sometimes use just The People's Republic to refer to the PRC.

Two other Marxist-Leninist states include the words People's Republic in their full names:

* Laos (Lao People's Democratic Republic)
* North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea)

Historical examples include:

* Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia (1946-1963)
o Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (1963-1992)
* Hungarian People's Republic (1949–1989)
* Mongolian People's Republic (1924–1992)
* People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen) (1967–1970)
* People's Republic of Albania (1946–1976)
o Socialist People's Republic of Albania (1976–1992)
* People's Republic of Bulgaria (1946–1990)
* People's Republic of Bukhara (1920–1924)
* People's Republic of Poland (1952–1989)
* People's Republic of Benin (1975–1990)
* People's Republic of the Congo (1970–1992)
* People's Republic of Mozambique (1975–1990)
* People's Republic of Angola (1975–1992)
* People's Republic of Kampuchea (1979–1989)
* Romanian People's Republic (1947–1965)
* Tuvinian People's Republic (1921–1944)

Other titles commonly used by Marxist-Leninist states are "Democratic Republic" (e.g. the German Democratic Republic or the Democratic Federal Yugoslavia between 1943 and 1946), and "Socialist Republic" (e.g. the Socialist Republic of Vietnam).
