E-mail notification of your turn [Done]

Postby ftummch1 on Sun Sep 30, 2007 3:38 pm

I see that the site has an RSS feed for games, but no e-mail notification of when it your turn in a game. Can anyone tell me why e-mail notification would not be a good idea for this site? I have seen such things implemented on other turn based gaming sites. If not, I guess I am submitting a suggestion of doing so. If a game is sequentially turn based, do people just log in at random times and hope that it happens to be their turn when do? Clearly a lot of people game on this site and must be OK with the notification system the way it's set up now. I am just missing something? Do people enjoy the advantage it might give them over people who obssesively check the website to see if it's their turn? BTW I think the 24 hour limit on taking your turn is a great idea, as I have been on other gaming sites where games drag on for weeks unecessarily because someone takes days to take their turn. I would welcome feedback from anyone and everyone if I am missing the point somehow.

That's only for the first turn. I think he wants one for each turn.

E-mail notification of your turn

Postby ftummch1 on Sun Sep 30, 2007 4:02 pm

Yes I am aware of that setting, and it was check to yes by default. I was notified by e-mail of my first turn, but I missed my susequent turn because I was expecting another email notifying me when it was my turn in the next round. If I lose this game because of missing my turn it really won't affect my ego at all, I am just curious as why things are set up the way they are. I hope this response clarifies my question for you. thanks for the reply anyways.

Well we have a pm for first turn in speed games. E-mail is a bit more difficult.

The 1st time i read it i thought of it as a bad idea. The reason for this is becasue im premium and i would have far to many emails coming through.

but as an option to turn on and off it would be a really good way to bring recruits back to the game when they know they can play
What do you know about map making, bitch?

Good idea, but only as an option (I'm sure lack wouldn't have thought of adding it otherwise, but just reiterating).

E-mail notification of your turn

Could you briefly explain why it is a bit more difficult? I have no experience in coding, website/game administration, etc., but if the game is able to send me an e-mail saying it is my turn in the first round, why is it more diffcult in subsequent rounds? I am not playing speed games and probably never will. My friends and I just don't have concurrent blocks of free time to play a game like that. Which why I think having to come to the website repeatedly just to see the message "waiting to play" is a a waste of anyone's time. Regardless of the outcome of this suggestion, my thanks still goes out to the people who maintain and pay for this site.

You know, the more I think about it the more this make sense (provided you can opt out). It could help us win the war on newbie deadbeats.

Would be good as an option "per game" too...

I.e. if you're playing a high paced game - you don't want it - but if you're playing a game that take 3 days per turn... you turn it on to tell you that it's finally ready...

Kindof like a "watch this game" button?

I like that idea. Of being able to know when a certain game in particular is ready. It could be very helpful to tournament organizers, gives the players a chance to be notified when their tournament games are active. Might not save tons of time, but a little here and there would help.

Well I assumed it would only work for "your" games...

Of course the next level is to "watch" others games... then you could get email at the start of a turn (game turn not player turn) -> or you could take it further - and say watch X's game...

Then you get mails at the start of a certain players turn... this would be great for someone "sitting" someone elses account!

Whoops, I suppose my comment was a little misleading. I meant it would only be for that particular players turns as well. I was just commenting that it would be nice if all players in a tournament could have the option to be notified when their "tournament" games are moving along at a faster pace. If you can pick and choose which games to have the notifications for it might save a little time in games within tournaments finishing a bit quicker, thereby benefiting everyone.
