The difference between a sprained ankle and a twisted ankle.

Postby unriggable on Tue Sep 18, 2007 8:21 pm

It's 9:20. At 3:30 PM today (a little under 6 hours ago) I fucked up, and now my ankle's swollen and it hurts to put pressure on this. Is it sprained or twisted, and what should I do about it?

Sprained vs Twisted = Essentially the same thing.

Rest...elevate...ice...don't walk on it.

Limp a lot.

I'm no doctor, but as I understand it a sprain is if the tendon is actually torn. With a sprain you can't put any weight on it at all. We just call it a twisted ankle if the tendon is just pulled and inflamed and you can still kinda limp on it. I sprained an ankle once a long time ago. I'd see a doctor if I were you. Meantime I'd ice it and/ or wrap in an ace bandage.

I dunno, because ive walked on a sprained ankle before. Its really a matter of time that determines the injury. If it continues to be swollen on and off, most likely a sprain. Twisted is just a pain in the ass for a while, but the swelling goes down much quicker.

the best you can do is ice it and rest (RICE method) as stated above. Go see your trainer or a doctor.

"Sprained" and "twisted" are just generic catch-all names for all sorts of things. Go to the doctor, and though very likely he won't be able to do a thing about it, he will at least give you a proper, cool-sounding medical name for your problem.

I sprained my ankle quite badly four months ago. Went to the doctor, and came away with a plantar fasciitis. Excellent!

I can't...I'm too unprepared for change...it hits me like the bicycle that caused the sprained ankle in the first place...

If doesn't get better after a few days you should get it x-rayed.

I managed to crack a bone in my ankle without realizing it until 5 days later. :(

You're probably talking about Tom Dempsey. 63 yards. I think he was with the Philadelphia Eagles at the time. Had some kind of deformed stub for a right foot. The scary thing is I was watching that game and it was probably before most of you were born. Between '72 and '76. Yes, I am an old fart.
