eliminated a person but can't play set?

I was playing an escalating cards game and I had 3 cards. I wiped out a person and got his 3 cards so I then had 2 playable sets. But I couldn't play them right away. I was 2 territories away from world domination too! The next turn my opponent played his cards and wiped me out. I died with 2 playable sets in my hand. Why couldn't I play them during my attack??

EDIT: i checked your game log, that esc game your talking about. well it seems you didn't actually elimenate the player. Pink had 2 terrs left which you missed out this allowed blue to finish off pink and take those cards.

but I had already killed teal that turn, so I had 6 cards on me, but I couldn't play them. Pink had 2 more territories too, which I almost killed, but i ran out of units
