You can unlock them by winning campaigns. You will get a lot of random factions if you win a campaign. Ive never won a large campaign, but in a small one, i think you win like 6 or 7. I dont know about beating them to unlock them, becuase for some factions, I beat them, then I got them, but for others i did the same thing and i didnt unlock the. I suggest short campaigns for unlocking teams.

Yes I have the game and think it is awesome. I would, however, recommend downloading the Rome Total Realism patch if you haven't done so already.

What is it for?

A whole bunch of Historians thought about all the wrong things about the game, so the whole point of Total Realism is to have everything historically correct, like not having axemen in the Eygptian Army.

Great game, but the AI (at least for my troops) absolutly sucks.

I had three units of War Elephants cut a bloody swathe of destruction clean across Iberia, with only a very few causalties, with no more advanced tactics than "Charge!". They encountered a single unit of Iberian Infantry and I, in my lazyness, decided to let the AI handle the battle, since my troops were all seasoned veterans and actually outnumbered the enemy.
The battle results came back: 6 elephants lost.

Each one of the elephants in my army must have killed 100 or more enemy soldiers, yet I loose 6 to 80 base infantry? Can't the Captain commanding these troops master the "Charge!" function?

Pathetic...

Also, whenever I control around a third of the map, my empire will spontaneously collapse due to it's own weight and corruption. Riots everywhere, income falls into the negative and the enemy swarm me under.

Screwy game... Fun, but screwy.

Same with me.. Which is why I let some towns go and only take back the ones that are really important (for trade and such).

Though.. My income never falls because I always keep the trade going... It's so much easier if you own the East, then you have grand trade.

Yes, that is true. Rome Total Realism also adds more cities to the map and is supposed to make the AI smarter. They also got rid of the Stupid Senate and Roman factions and combined them into one Roman Nation.

You can go to this website:

http://www.rometotalrealism.com/

To check it out if you'd like. It is old and now updates have been made for a while but I would still recommend downloading it.

I checked out the site, and it said, to install it, you have to uninstall the game and re-install with the patch. Is that true? If so, Im losing all my aquired factions, and data  Thats barely worth it, although some of the improvements are really great.

I played it.. I have it, though when a big thing happens (like a Crusade is called or you have to elect a pope) it just closes down for me. I have no idea why it does this.

I don't know what you mean about "acquired factions". If your talking about the factions that you unlock then you don't really lose them as the RTR patch unlocks all the factions. The only data you'd lose is a save game or two.

I don't have the patch, Ricky8179 does.. I think.

Ricky, does it make the game better, or do you like it more without the patch?

Just remember that you have to download the patches and install them sequentially. 6.2 won't work without 6.1 for example. And you do need a 1.2 patch for all of the patches to be installed. It should all be there on the website.

If your having problems installing the patches also make sure that you have completely gotten rid of RTW on your computer. After uninstalling it I went to the start menu, right clicked, explore, found the files that weren't uninstalled (usually just the save games), and dragged them to the recycling bin. Hopefully that helps.

If you have a problem let me know and I'll help out as best I can.
