Ignorance is Bliss.

Postby Skittles! on Sun Aug 05, 2007 8:31 am

This was the theme for the Gunniess (SP) Great Debate, which was held in Melbourne tonight. It was a comedic thing, but also had great truths in it.

Is Ignorance blissful?

The Affirmative used the tactic that ones with intellect, seemed to be less happy than the ignorant, I agree with that. If I was as ignorant as the most of the school, then indeed I would be more happy. Another thing they brought up were children. Children are ignorant of the modern world, only thinking for their immediate surroundings, and aren't they truly happy?

The Disagreer's used the tactic that "Knowledge is power, and ignorance is not blissful". Sure, knowledge is power, but is it happiness? What would you rather, happiness, or power?

There are things that shouldn't be ignored, but then there's others where you wished you never knew.

So, representitives of Conquerclub, uses of the Clubhouse, decide; Is ignorance blissful?

Ignorance is bliss, but it comes with the price of...well, ignorance. Think about, not having to know anything going on in the world, like that the war on terror is failing, Al Quaeda is growing stronger, global warming is happening 10X faster than predicted. I envy the ignorant, not having to think about that shit.

This is the best reply I've ever seen to this statement.

Anyone who says that ignorance isn't bliss is blissfully ignorant of their own ignorance. ;)

Yeah, ignorance is blissful - most of the time. The problem is that the longer you stay ignorant, the more it hurts when reality comes crashing down around you.

Then again, ignorance of certain things is not desired

eg1: sex
eg2: drink... on second thoughts ignorance is sometimes better... getting totally wasted usually isn't fun but tipsyness is certainly worthwhile :D

It is, but it's spelled with two e's and means "to ask". :)

I at first had it spelt with two e's, but then yeah. And I totally used the wrong concept of it.

Maybe.

Doesn't anyone apart from a few people have any thoughts on this?

OK, smart boy, you win. I clearly read too many newspapers, where they use words like "besieged", "fight", "hit" etc. in contexts where we wouldn't use them in everyday speech, but I still think it's what Skittles was thinking of...

It's definitely easier to be ignorant.

It's funny, I've often found myself out late on the town or whatever and it's come to the part of the night where all you can think about is food, and all that will be open is McDonald's or KFC or some shit like that. That's pretty much the only time where I think 'f*ck I wish I was a dumb f*ck and still ate this shit because I'm fucking starving'

If ignorance is bliss than knock the smile off my face

just to add to the argument (because it seems too one-sided) if ignorance is bliss then why do we keep trying to learn more? we naturally do whatever makes us happy, so if we know that being happy means to stop learning, why do we continue?

be happy? can't you just sit in a park and stare at the clouds, doing nothing, and be happy?

Not worry yourself to death, that's a good thing other than learning.
