I've nothing against the French, or even the English.

Blowhard patriots in Scotland, though, like to talk about the "Auld Alliance", a period of a few hundred years a really long time ago, when Scotland and France were close allies - and stopping the English from getting too big for their boots.

Which is all fine, except it finished 500 years ago.
