Yet Another Terror Plot

Postby Nobunaga on Fri Jun 29, 2007 10:47 am

... "People are being warned to stay vigilant after a "massive" car bomb, which could have killed hundreds of nightclub revelers, was defused in London's West End".

... They (terrorists) just keep at it.

http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,, ... 10,00.html

.... seems a bit second rate, though...

.... Something like 1 camera per 14 people in London?

... They got a shot of this guy? (these guys?)

... and would they show it to you if they did? Probably not, for fear of a run on Pakis living in London.

the bomb didn't sound like it could kill or seriously injure hundreds or whatever. it was an explosion that was supposed to propel nails in all directions like shrapnel.

You do realise that the statement you just made was intensely racist... I'm hoping you don't know the real connotations of the word as your an American living in Japan (from what I've read) but if you do then my opinion of you has just plummeted.

To answer the general thrust of your post whilst ignoring the racism, yes of course they would you dick. We've all seen CCTV of the failed London plot from July 21st... The vast majority of the British public are tolerant, accepting and moderate and would never consider a 'run' on the Muslim elements of our communities. We didn't after 7/7 and we won't now, whatever vengeful spite people like the BNP and the Daily Mail like to spit.

... Paki is a racist term?

... Heard it a million times, used by ... well, by people from Pakistan, as well as Brits.

... Anyway, no offense was intended.

... "stan" means "nation"... Afghanistan being the nation of Afghans... Turkemistan being the nation of Turkmenis, ... what might have been Kurdistan (had things gone differently in Iraq), would have been a nation of Kurds.

... But... if anybody was offended, I do apologize.

... seriously.

... that "dick" was a bit much, though.

I know what stan means. I know what the Paki part means too. The stan in this case actually comes as part of Baluchistan, with the previous letters standing for Punjab, Afghan proince, Kashmir and Sindh. In the UK Paki is very much a racist term for anyone from the Indian subcontinent. Pretty much similar to Nigger in its connotations and acceptability. But I realise you may well have not come across it used in that way.

My anger about the point of your post stands, however. How many lynchings or violent anti-Muslim mobs have you heard about in recent British history? It seems a ridiculous assertion to cast upon a people you clearly have no clue about.

... Well, I've no doubt you know what you're talking about, so my apology stands.

... I have seen numerous reports of instances of racial violence in the UK, usually acts committed by white youth (often drunk) against blacks, against Indians, etc... Which was the reasoning behind my comment.

... Notice, I made no claim that such an abhorrence (racial attacks) would not have at least an equal probability of occurrence, if indeed not greater, in my home country.

... Back on topic, it seems AL-QA'EDA is suspected in this plot. Seems a bit low-tech for them, but it's got to be a bit unnerving for Londoners all the same.

... It's an American thing.

... The terror threat is being denied by many politicians, claiming that such is just a tool being used to scare the public and to keep the Patriot Act in place. It became a big thing when the film maker, Michael Moore said as much, and shortly thereafter by John Edwards (running for Pres in 2008, maybe).

... You probably knew that. I just typed it out for the benefit of anybody who might not.

... Back on topic, I thought at first, upon hearing about these car bombs, that this might have something to do with theRushdie Knighthood ... as there were rather large protests as a result, and not only in Britain... "Death to the Queen", etc...

... Yeah.. low-tech.

... There was gasoline, pressurized cans of gas (like you hook up to BBQ), and many boxes of nails (obvious reasons).

... The second car bomb is suspected to have been placed to kill people fleeing the first explosion (this technique has been used a lot in Iraq, I read).

... A fertilizer explosive (like in Oklahoma, years back) might have a lot more explosive power.... I think. (no scientific knowledge... just guessing - seen the Fed building in Oklahoma?)

The heat from the petrol flame that is really hard to put out would set off the canisters.

However, I suspect they probably just thought it would explode like in the movies.

Not much, movies would be too boring if they were realistic.

It seems they were attempting to make a gas-air mix bomb, or something. I saw the theory and it looked pretty deadly. A smaller amount of petrol was lit through a remote fuse attached to a mobile phone, and this disperses the gas vapour by perforating the gas cylinder or whatever. Then this will catch and explode with fairl nasty results, especially when combined with the nails and shrapnel and whatever else they'd left on the back seats to maim and injure. It sounds like a fairly hard thing to do and luckily they didn't pull it off, but it could have been pretty awful.

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/dumb/fae.htm is the theory I think.

Is the terror threat being used to manipulate the populace? Undoubtedly. The Iraq invasion wouldn't have had the original level of support it had in the US otherwise.

But the muslims in Pakistan and elsewhere who shake their heads in disgust at Rushdie's knighthood don't make it onto our screens - we only see the effigy-burning lunatic fringe instead. It's not representative, just like the thankfully few race reprisal attacks in the UK were not at all representative of national feeling.
